Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter A LIVING HOPE... ...A SURE SALVATION Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter

Lesson 1 – General Introduction Outline Of 1st Peter SALVATION: The Attainment Of Believers 1:1 – 2:10 SUBMISSION: The Appeal To Believers 2:11 – 3:12 4

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Civic Relationships 2:13-17 We submit to every human authority…such is “the will of God” v. 13-15a Mt 22:21 Rom 13:1-2, 5-7 Doing so “silences the ignorance of foolish men” (“muzzles our critics”) v. 15b

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Civic Relationships 2:13-17 This “allegiance” is not unconditional Acts 4:18-20 5:29 Because we’re “free,” we do not possess the right to act any way we want to…as a “cover for evil” v. 16a cp. Gal 5:13

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Civic Relationships 2:13-17 We’re still “bond-slaves to God” v. 16b Rom 6:16-18 Men are to be “honored”…brethren are to be “loved”…God is to be “feared”…the king is to be “honored” v. 17

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Secular Relationships 2:18-20 Peter addresses servants v. 18 Modern-day equivalent Ü employees Those having that role in such a relationship must “respect” those who oversee them… whether they are “good” or “unreasonable”

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Secular Relationships 2:18-20 Submitting under adverse conditions “…finds favor with God” vv. 19-20 What does it indicate (prove) when we suffer unjustly and bear up under sorrows? Our faith (trust) is in God!! Col 3:22-24

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Secular Relationships 2:18-20 There is no “credit” if we suffer because our behavior hasn’t been “excellent” v. 20a, 12 However, if we are “harshly treated” and “endure it with patience”…God will be pleased v. 20b

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Our Relationship To Christ 2:21-25 A direct connection to previous context Jesus is portrayed as our “Example” We “…have been called for this purpose” (i.e. to suffer unjustly for faith v. 21) Acts 14:22 2 Tim 3:12 Phil 1:29-30

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Our Relationship To Christ 2:21-25 Jesus is portrayed as our “Example” He “suffered”…yet, “no sin” v. 21 He didn’t return revile v. 22 Rom 12:17-21 He “uttered no threats…entrusted Himself to Him who judges righteously” v. 23 4:19

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Our Relationship To Christ 2:21-25 Jesus is portrayed as our “Example” He shows what it means to “trust God” enough to do His will…especially in difficult conditions that are not conducive to faith

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Our Relationship To Christ 2:21-25 Jesus is portrayed as our “Example” His “unjust suffering” = vicarious v. 24 His “unjust suffering” brought about our “death to sin” & “living to righteousness”… our “healing”…our “rescue from straying” v. 25

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Our Relationship To Christ 2:21-25 Jesus is portrayed as our “Example” Benefits of our own “unjust suffering”… - Others being saved v. 12 Mt 5:13-16 - Our own faith (our level of trusting God) would be strengthened

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6 A wife must submit to her husband v. 1a, 2 Eph 5 Col 3 Even if she is married to an unbeliever Her “chaste” conduct would do more than any spoken word re: his own salvation v. 1b 1:12

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6 “In the same way…” (Likewise) is contextual The previous context = submitting…even if suffering unjust treatment 2:18-25 This point must not be ignored if we are to properly understand vv. 1-6

Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6 “In the same way…” (Likewise) is contextual The woman’s status as a Christian doesn’t remove her obligations to her husband any more than a slave’s discipleship removed his obligations to his master
