Visit to Slovenija 5-9.9.2016

5.9.2016 Slovenian forestry institute (presentation of political frame, Advisory system for forest owners, Support system (subsidiaries) for forest owners) Visiting biomass center and CHP After lunch driving to Bohinj – forest operations in small scale forest estate Hotel in Kranjska gora

Ministry for economy development and technology Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Ministry for Environment and Spatial Planning Wood Industry Directorate Directorate for environment Directorate for Forestry, Hunting and Fisheries Rural development program The Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation Inspectorate Slovenian forest service Slovenian forestry institute Biotechnical faculty – Depart. For forestry Slovenski državni gozdovi – public company Private forest companies Secondary School for Forestry and Wood Processing Chamber of agriculture and forestry Forest owners associationc Association of Machine rings

Forest ownership More that 70 % of forest is owned by forest owners – we still don’t know them?! Only bigger forest owners can be market plyers – what is big forest owner – with more than 5 ha? The fact is: we exploit less than 30 % of biomass potential from private forests It is estimated that more than 1/3 of all households have forest in Sloveni, but only 30 % of them have more tha 5 ha of forest.

Biomass production and use in Slovenia Wood logs are used in households Wood chips – fast development sector in last 10 years Wood pellets – new market, production mainly for export, large import Production of wood fuels is increasing faster than demond = export

Use of wood biomass – energy sector Use of wood biomass in different sectors in Slovenia Source of data: (SORS, SFI)

Wood fuel market

Wood chips production Yearly production around 1.500.000 lm3 http://www.gozdis.si/raziskovalna-dejavnost/proizvajalci-lesnih-goriv/ Yearly production around 1.500.000 lm3 More than 140 producers Increase in production for 85 % (comparing y. 2007) 27 % of wood chips are exported

Pellet production 6 producers in 2011 http://www.gozdis.si/raziskovalna-dejavnost/proizvajalci-lesnih-goriv/ 6 producers in 2011 More than 20 producers in 2016 – production is more than 110.000 t

Afforestation of Karst More than 100 years Today – a number of small forest owners, natural overgrowing of agricultural land, low quality wood, different functions of forests, forest fires

Forest fires prevention

8.9.2016 Driving to high Karst area Postojna – forestry training school Lesonit - wood panel company Mašun - Long tradition of forest management Visiting Cerknica lake (the largest sinking lake) – nature conservation

Production of wood assortments Only official cut is taken in cosideration Source of data: SORS, SFS, SFI,

Import/Export

9.9.2016 Ljubljana – project meeting Presentation of Faculty and Chamber of agriculture and forestry Biomass laboratory Forest management in urban forests

Analysis of wood fuels quality at Slovenian forestry institute New wood biomass laboratory We performed 4 larger market analysis in last 3 years All together we have more than 200 analysis of wood pellets in our data set The biggest problem are mechanical durability and ash content We are in the process of registration od trade mark S4Q

Good practice examples

Slovenian forestry institute Forestry institute – in Ljubljana Before: 40.000 - 50.000 L of heating oil = 42.500 € Now: from 470 to 500 loose m3 of wood chips =13.000 € Difference more than 25.000 €/year Investment was 160.000 € Pay-beck time is 8 years, we save 110 t of CO2 per year and we created 1 new job
