Natural Resources Something found in nature that can be used to benefit us. Examples: Air, water, soil Biological resources (plants and animals) Raw materials (minerals) Space and land Wind, geothermal, tidal and solar energy Are often classified into renewable or nonrenewable resources.

Nonrenewable Resources A natural resource that exist in a fixed amount. They are renewed very slowly or not at all. Consumption is faster than the rate it can be replaced.

Nonrenewable Resources Coal Oil Natural Gas Petroleum Nuclear Energy

Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear Energy Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

Coal, Petroleum and Natural Gas Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

Renewable Resources Natural resources that can be replaced by nature at a rate close to the rate at which they are used. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

Explain why energy from the sun is renewable SOLAR Energy from the sun. Explain why energy from the sun is renewable

GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Explain why energy from the Earth’s heat is renewable.

Explain why energy from the wind is renewable.

BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Explain why energy from biomass is renewable.

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Explain why energy from water is renewable

Think About It How does the way in which some resources are used affect Earth’s Environment? Can lead to pollution of land, air and water. May contribute to an increase in climate (global warming?)
