Harcourt Lesson 1 Day 4

Synonyms and antonyms as context clues Check out these sentences: Bolivia was hungry. Rory was ravenous, too. Look at the underlined words. Do you think they are synonyms or antonyms? What were the clues? Bolivia ate a large amount of vegetables, but Derek at a meager handful.

Knowing many synonyms and antonyms can help you improve your writing by helping you use new words instead of using tired, worn-out words. We are going to begin a class thesaurus that we can add to as the year goes along. I’m going to give each group a tired, worn-out word and I want you to find new words in a thesaurus to begin our class thesaurus.

VOCABULARY Answer the following questions and be able to explain your answers. If one country breaks a pact with another country, what might be the result? Which would make you feel more queasy, competing in a spelling bee or diving off the high board into a swimming pool? Why?

How would you feel if friends of your family came to visit and foisted their four-year-old child on you for the day? What new venture might you like to start someday? Why? Describe a time when you were annoyed by a sound. What is one effect of depriving a garden of water?

Fluency Turn to page 36 in your reader. Follow along while I read the first 4 paragraphs on page 36. Listen closely as I pay attention to punctuation and read smoothly. Move your fingers under the words to pay attention to the correct pronunciation of every word. Let’s begin choral reading with paragraph 5. Remember to pay attention to punctuation and try to read like you speak.
