MYP DESIGN – Year 1 – 23rd October – 27th October

Design Situation A short introduction to a project which frames a design  project in terms of the nature of the problem to be addressed or an area from which students will identify a challenge or problem that needs to be solved.  You are an advertising expert in a media company. You have to create an advertisement of a product to make it popular. Your parents, teachers or friends can be your clients.

DESIGN SITUATION GUIDANCE The problem is mainly text (writing) that is written in a clear style so that it can be read and understood easily. The problem is a paragraph or more in length. It describes the problem you are aiming to solve. Do not say how you intend to solve the problem, only what the problem is. The first sentence should state the problem, adding more detail with the following sentences.

Your task for today is to search for an advert on which you can identify problems in designing the advert by reviewing the questions that you have asked an advert in the previous lesson. Who is responsible for the ad? What audience is the ad targeting? What makes you think so. What techniques do the ad use? What does the ad say or suggest about the product or service? What does the ad say about the people who buy the product or service? If you are not able to get proper answers to the advert that you have selected, you have identified your advert to be designed. You may also want to create an advert for any ASA club at EISM, or any Initiative that is happening in and around Dubai.

Write a design problem of not more than 200 words (not limited to 200) to explain the problem. Guiding questions that you need to answer are:- What is the problem that you have identified in your advert? It may be not proper pictures, use of colour, not created for the target audience etc. Who is facing the problem? Why is it important to solve the problem? The picture given on the next slide gives you an idea about things that you need to focus in identifying your problem.

Example – DESIGN SITUATION EISM To Read is an initiative that has started this year to promote reading in the UAE. GLOBAL ISSUE – Globally failing how to read has emerged as a critical problem and ending illiteracy is one of the millennium development goals. According to UNESCO statistics the below mentioned pictures show the percentage of Illiterate population among adults and youth. The Cabinet of UAE approved the declaration of 2016 as the year of reading and instructed the competent authorities to start preparing a national framework that promotes reading among Emirati generations, in a quest to create a generation of book lovers and lifetime readers. Shaikh Khalifa underlined the importance of reading in broadening one’s intellect and knowledge, as well as in promoting tolerance, openness and intercultural communication. “Our goal is to consolidate the UAE as a global capital of culture, bring about lifelong behavioral change and immune next generations culturally," he said. “A nation and its people cannot progress without reading. The scientists, researchers and innovators that will lead the future will not come from nowhere. We have to create them on the basis of a love for reading and a passion for knowledge and curiosity,” Shaikh Mohammad said in a series of tweets. As part of this, EISM as a school has coined an imitative which helps promote reading in schools because that is the first place where reading needs to be inculcated. Since in MYP Design we are learning about advertisements and have seen that these are the best way to persuade a person to do something. As part of this initiative I noticed that there are currently no such adverts in and around the school that will motivate the children to read. I have found it a necessity to promote children so that it improves concentration, vocabulary and imaginative powers in a child. I have decided to utilize my skills in designing an advert which will promote reading throughout the school.
