How do elements, compounds, and mixtures affect your life? Essential Question How do elements, compounds, and mixtures affect your life?

Create and label the periodic table. Objective Create and label the periodic table.

Standard 7-5.4 Use the periodic table to identify the basic organization of elements and groups of elements (including metals, nonmetals, and families).

The Periodic Table 1. The periodic table is used to show the basic organization of elements.

2. A horizontal row on the periodic table is called a period. 3. Every periodic table will have a square for each element with the atomic number, atomic mass, element name, and the element symbol.

4. The elements on the periodic table are arranged numerically by atomic numbers.

5. Families, also called groups, are vertical columns of elements on the periodic table; they are usually numbered 1-18. Elements in the same family have similar properties.

6. On the periodic table there is a zigzag line on the right side of the table. There are two sections of elements on the periodic table, metals and nonmetals.

7. Metals are the major classification of elements generally located on the left side of the zigzag line on the periodic table.

8. Examples of metals are: Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), and Aluminum (Al). The majority of elements are metals.

9. Nonmetals are the major classification of elements generally located on the right side of the zigzag line on the periodic table.

10. Examples of nonmetals are: Chlorine (Cl), Oxygen (O), Sulfur (S), and Iodine (I).

Periodic Table Rewind Use the rubric provided to create and label the periodic table on the poster paper provided. Be sure to be neat and organized. Be sure to follow the rubric. Use the periodic table, rulers, markers, and crayons as needed. Everyone should be “Flying Solo”, no peer collaboration. Optional - Listen to the periodic table song while completing your project.
