Paul R Christen High Adventure Base The Christen National High Adventure Base began operations in June 2014 with programs focused on action sports. Programs run Sundays to Saturdays. Participants camp in the Christen High Adventure Base camp at the Summit. For those of you who may have attended the Jamboree, that is basecamps Alpha and Bravo. Programs include opportunities for council contingents, individual troops, teams and crews, and individual Scouts and Venturers attending as provisional participants. Let’s talk about the programs that are part of the high adventure program.

The Summit Experience gives you the full range of the high adventure capabilities available at the Summit. Ten different activities provide a wide variety of experiences, including climbing and rappelling, challenge courses, canopy tour, rifle and shotgun, archery, skateboarding, mountain biking, service project and BMX. And of course, everybody rides the 3,200 ft. Big Zip. For units with a wide variety of interests, this is your program.

Summit Experience High Adventure Program

Schedule This is a seven-day/six-night program running Sunday to Saturday. It consists of half-day introductory level experiences at each of the nine Summit high adventure venues. In addition, each group will perform a half-day service project and have the chance to ride The Big Zip – our 3⁄4 mile zip line. In addition, each night (Monday-Friday), we will open the Scott Summit Center for activities, fun and socializing. The Scott Summit Center incorporates small versions of our adventure sports venues.

Qualifications and Details The Summit Experience is open to registered Scouts and Venturers who are at least 13 years old by the September 1 of the year they attend and their registered leaders. --- (For 2018, this is birthday prior to Sept 1, 2005.  There is no stated rank requirement. Mike M.) The minimum group size is seven with the majority being youth members. There is no maximum group size. The Summit provides tents, cots and all program equipment. Breakfast and dinner served in the Summit dining hall. Shelf-stable lunches issued to accompany participants to their daily program venues.

Activites The Rocks: Experience the Summit’s extensive artificial rock climbing structures and world class rappelling towers. The Ropes: The Ropes is the Summit’s high element challenge course. You will be in the trees and moving up, over, around, under and through all sorts of physically and mentally challenging obstacles

Activities The Canopy: A series of zip lines through the “canopy” of the forest. You will get a whole new perspective on the outdoors from between 50 and 100 feet up in the trees. Canopy tours contain between 7 and 9 zip lines on a tour. The Trax: You will find BMX tracks for beginners who have never experienced the sport, intermediate tracks for those who have done it before and advanced tracks for those with a lot of experience.

Activites The Park: Come experience the Summit’s extensive skate park. Second largest in America. This large area has elements for beginner, intermediate and advanced skaters. Elements include: bowls, rails, rollers and even a jump pit filled with foam cubes where you can hone your tricks without having to worry about the hard landing at the end.

Activites The Bows: At the Bows you will have the chance to hit a bullseye in static target archery, 3d archery and “sporting arrows”. Multiple distance static target ranges going as far as 90 meters. Three-dimensional archery trail with up to 18 stations. Try your hand at “Sporting Arrows.” A launcher propels a 10 inch foam disk into the air and you aim and shoot at this moving target with your bow and arrow.

Activites Barrels: Test your aim at the Barrels with multiple disciplines of shooting sports. Ranges include Rifle- .22, .223 and .308 caliber, shotgun- trap shooting, Sporting Clays and 5 stand. Low Gear: Over 35 miles of mountain biking trails. Both cross country and downhill trails to challenge riders at all levels Lake Kayaking: On one of the Summit’s beautiful lakes you will get to hone your paddling skill

Activites The Big Zip – 3⁄4 mile zip line, 5 lines wide, simultaneous launch, reaching 60 MPH, from a mountaintop to a landing in a valley, passing 400 feet over a lake. Half Day Service Project Conservation Based within the Summit Area

Additional Activity White Water Rafting ($65.00 per person additional cost if selected.) Spend a half day rafting down the Lower New River with professional white water rafting partners. The Summit has partnered with local outfitters who have years of experience leading trips down the New River. The lower new river provides class 2 through 4 rapids depending on weather, time of year and rainfall.
