Gift Planning for the Future

Speakers President LCMS Foundation Director ELCA Foundation David Fiedler Annette Shoemaker President LCMS Foundation Director ELCA Foundation One hand-held mike for audience questions;

Gift Planning and Endowment Services

The Ministry of the Foundation To provide charitable expertise and services to help you plan and direct your passion for giving to family and your favorite ministries today, tomorrow and forever.

Why We Exist - 1958 To create “programs of deferred giving…for the Synod, its districts, colleges, seminaries and other agencies” To “provide investment management services” for planned gifts and trust funds of the Synod and its agencies

“The Foundation is Synod’s organization…” President John Behnken “The Foundation is Synod’s organization…”

When we do our jobs well, the blessing and benefit is to the ministries of the Synod and the donors we serve.

Gift Planning Staff 16 full-time counselors 3 part-time counselors 30 associate counselors; formal relationship, trained and supported

Core Belief God has placed a desire to be generous in each believer’s heart. They want to give Their plan is a gift from God that longs for expression

Wealth Transfer An opportunity to encourage God’s children to practice proper Christian stewardship with the assets they manage for God in harmony with their values and to accomplish God’s purposes. 2005 2055 $14 - $42 trillion

Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God’s family, the church, in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes. -LCMS Definition of Stewardship God is the owner of all creation. We are managers, not owners. We are accountable to the owner.

Current Situation The church encourages people to be stewards of 100% of what God has given them… and yet only 30% of our members have wills or living trusts. 70% of our members who have wills need to have them updated… and only 2-3% of those who go to an attorney give a gift to ministry.

Why We Don’t Make Wills or Living Trusts No one to educate me No one to encourage me No one to ask me or help me Don’t plan to die

A Service to Your Supporters Designed to: Assist them in transferring your earthly blessings As generous people of faith To make the very best gifts To family and to ministry

A Complete Gift Plan includes: Christian Will or Revocable Living Trust. Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Affairs. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. Review of beneficiary designations. A gift plan to provide for your family. A gift plan for your favorite ministries. A statement of faith.

Revocable gifts LCMS donors worked with Foundation counselors to produce 264 recorded gifts in FY16 Estimated future value: $106.3 million Bequests, beneficiary designations and other testamentary gifts Major multi-year initiative in place to realize much higher percentage of these gifts

New FY16 Managed Gifts $7.1 million to 265 endowments $1.3 million to 92 donor-advised funds $10.1 million to 249 gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts

Distributions In FY16 2,700 gifts distributed to 868 LCMS ministries totaling $30 million. Many resulting from gift planning work done years ago.

Ministry Distributions Trend 2006-2016 - Excludes Custodial withdrawals and Beneficiary Distributions

Gifts and Gift Intentions Totals of all categories, over last three FY FY 2016: $155 million FY 2015: $123 million FY 2014: $141 million Total: $419 million

Is this an effort that could impact the vision and reach of your organization?
