Civics 1.10 The student will apply the traits of a good citizen by a)focusing on fair play, exhibiting good sportsmanship, helping others, and treating others with respect; After listening to the read-a-loud “This is the Way We Go to School by Edith Bauer students will recognize that children are diverse. They will realize that people live and attend school by using different methods of transportation. The methods of transportation may depend on the location, climate, etc. which are all characteristics of a community. ACTIVITY 1 We will discuss some of the characters in the book and the places that they live. Students will be shown a map and be asked to place a picture of the characters onto the map to represent where the charaters live. They will be asked why they believe that each of the character uses a particular method of transportation and are dressed the way in which they are dressed. Additonally, students will be shown Richmond, VA on the map. We will also place a picture of Woodville on the map to represent our location in Richmond VA ACTIVITY 2 Students will write in their journal about their community. Where do you live and how do you get to school each day? Children will write to the prompt “ I live in ______________________. I get to school by ____________________________________. (School bus, walking, car, van) And they will draw an illustration of themselves on their way to school. Antonette Harris TEDU591CONCEPT MAP

Antonette Harris TEDU591CONCEPT MAP Science 1.7 The student will investigate and understand weather and seasonal changes. Key concepts include a)changes in temperature, light, and precipitation affect plants and animals, including humans; Writing 1.13 The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes. a) Generate ideas. b) Focus on one topic. Activity 7 : Students will learn that there are weather and seasonal changes that affect the ways in which people live. We will refer back to the book “This is the Way We Go to School” as a reference to show that the weather affects the way in which people live. Students will learn the four seasons. In the summer we wear shorts and go swimming because it is hot. In the winter we wear coats and go ice skating because it is cold. When it is raining we wear rain gear. Students will show their understanding by matching the seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter, rain, snow, sun) with appropriate pictures using a seasonal sort. Activity 8: Students will be given a piece of construction paper divided into fourths. They will draw a picture and write a sentence illustrating what they do in the summer, spring, fall and winter.
