THE PERIOD OF LENT 40 DAYS BEFORE EASTER ΣΑΡΑΚΟΣΤΗ SARAKOSTI THE PERIOD OF LENT 40 DAYS BEFORE EASTER
I KIRA-SARAKOSTI
AN OLD CUSTOM In the past, women made this lady with flour and water. She had seven legs, a cross on her forehead and no mouth. The legs symbolize the weeks until Easter and people cut off one leg at the end of each week. She had no mouth because she had to avoid meat, milk and eggs during the period of Lent.
During Lent, in Greece we eat pickles from various vegetables.
Black-eyed peas.
Shrimps and Octopus.
Chickpeas
Cuttlefish with spinach
Dolmades with rice
SOME SWEETS:
Halva with meal
ON GOOD SATURDAY: ON GOOD THURSDAY, WE PAINT EGGS RED TO SYMPOLISE THE BLOOD OF CHRIST AND WE EAT THEM AFTER THE SERVICE OF THE RESURRECTION.
We eat a soup made with parts of lamb, such as liver and lettuce.
We make a circular bread richly decorated.
We make special cookies.
AT EASTER
We roast lamb on the spit.
We make kokoretsi and roast it on the spit.
And we eat tsoureki as a sweet, which is made with milk, flour, eggs and butter.
