EQUIVALENT RATIOS

NOTES/VOCAB Ratio: A comparison of two quantities using division Equivalent ratios are ratios that name the same comparison. You can find an equivalent ratio by multiplying or dividing both terms of a ratio by the same number Today we will learn how to create and use a table to find equivalent ratios.

What will this look like on the FCAT? The ratio of soccer players to baseball players on two school teams is 4 to 7. Which of the following could be the number of players on each team?   A. 12 soccer players and 15 baseball players B. 12 soccer players and 21 baseball players C. 16 soccer players and 19 baseball players D. 16 soccer players and 49 baseball players

Example 1: How to find an equivalent ratio The ratio of boys to girls in Mr. Herring’s class is 2/1. Use a table to find three equivalent ratios Original x2 x3 x4 Boys 2 4 6 8 Girls 1 3

Example 2 The ratio of students with brown eyes to students with blue eyes is 7:2. Use a table to find three equivalent ratios. Original x2 x3 x4 Brown 7 14 21 28 Blue 2 4 6 8

Example 3: FCAT Problem The ratio of boys to girls in Mr. Herring’s class is 3:2. If there are 25 total students in the class, how many more boys than girls are there? Original x2 x3 x4 x5 Boys 3 6 9 12 15 Girls 2 4 8 10 Total 5 20 25

Guided Practice #1 Work with a partner (but BOTH need to show the answer) The ratio of baseballs to footballs in a bag are 4:3. Use a table to write three equivalent ratios.

Guided Practice #2 Work with a partner (but BOTH need to show an answer) The ratio of boys to girls in Mr. Perrin’s classroom is 5:2. Use a table to determine how many boys are in the classroom if there are 21 students total.

Guided Practice #3 Work with a partner (but BOTH need to show an answer) The ratio of apples to oranges in a fruit bowl is 2:1. If there are 15 pieces of fruit total, how many more apples are there than oranges?
