Focus Definition Descriptive Process Narrative Paragraph Type Comparison/Contrast Definition Focuses: Paragraph type

Narrative Paragraph Narration is story writing. When writing a narrative paragraph, you write about events in the order they happen. That is, you use time order to organize your sentences. Go to p. 24 for a model of narrative paragraph. Practice “Try It Out” on p. 28. Read the Model paragraph on p. 29.

Descriptive Paragraph Descriptive writing tells how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, and/or sounds. A good description is a word picture which the reader can imagine the object, place, or person in his or her mind. A description usually follows a pattern of organization that we call spatial order.

Descriptive Para. continued… Read the model paragraph on p. 61. In a description, writers often use spatial order to organize their ideas. Spatial order is the arrangement of items in order by space. Go to p. 62 for illustrations of spatial order.

Process Paragraph In a process paragraph, you explain how to make or do something, so process paragraphs are also called how-to paragraphs. To explain how to do something clearly, break the process down into a series of steps and explain each step. Go to p. 95 for a model process paragraph.

How to Write a Process Paragraph It begins with a topic sentence that names the topic and tells the reader to look for a process or procedure. Use words such as steps, procedure, directions, suggestions, and instructions. The supporting sentences are the steps and details about each step. The concluding sentence can be the last step, or it can give the results. Go to p. 96 for examples.

Comparison/Contrast Paragraph When we compare two (or more) things, we tell what is similar about them. When we contrast things, we tell what is different about them. Usually, the emphasis is on the differences ,but sometimes a para. describes both similarities and differences. Read the model paragraph on p. 109 and 110.

How to Write a Comparison/Contrast Paragraph Two ways to write a comparison/contrast paragraph Block organization Point-by-point organization

Block Organization In block organization, you group all the similarities together in one block and all the differences together in one block. All similarities All differences

Point-by-Point Organization In point-by-point organization, you write about similarities and differences by subtopic. Similarities and differences Go to p. 111 for an example.

How to Write a Comparison/Contrast Para. The topic sentence should name the topic and also indicate comparison/contrast organization (p. 112). A concluding sentence for a comparison/contrast paragraph may repeat the main idea, and it may also make a recommendation (p.112).

Signals for Comparison/Contrast Para. Read the model paragraph on p. 114 Go to p. 115 for comparison signals chart. Go to p. 118 for contrast signals chart.

Definition Paragraph Definition paragraphs ask you to define or explain something. Read the model paragraphs on p. 126 and 127.

How to Write a Definition Paragraph For the topic sentence, give three pieces of information: The word or thing you will define or explain (the topic) The large category or group to which the word or thing belongs The distinguishing characteristics that make it different form other members of the category (p. 127)

How to Write a Definition Paragraph Continued… For the supporting sentences: add details that explain the topic more completely. The supporting sentences may give additional facts telling who, what, where, when, how, or why, an explanation of a process, examples, or a description. (p. 128)

How to Write a Definition Paragraph Continued… For the concluding sentence: tell the readers why the topic is important, interesting, or unique. Do Practice 1 on p. 128.
