Unit 09 Computer Networks Introduction to Networks BTEC Nat Bus - Principles of Networking

In this Unit: Types of Network Systems and related standards Definition of a Network, Types of network (WANS, LANS etc), Network protocols and standards, Application layer protocols Hardware and Software used in Networking Networking devices, Interconnection devices, Connectors and cabling, Software, Commercial systems BTEC Computing Networks

In This Unit (cont): Services provided by network systems Directory services, Telecommunication services, File services, Application services Networked systems’ security Risk related business issues, Securing data, Software BTEC Computing Networks

BTEC L3 Unit 09 Learning Aims: Know the types of network systems and related standards Understand the hardware and software used in networking Know the services provided by network systems Understand how networked systems are made secure BTEC Computing Networks

Learning Resources All content, presentations, tasks, fact sheets, videos, practical instructions, knowledge checks exercises will be on the Your Space Course and the computing Wiki. Your Space Wiki BTEC Computing Networks

Practical's For all practical exercises will require students to follow the T104 workshop good working practices Evidence of practical's must be submitted to Your Space Assignment responses must be submitted to Turnitin Video/photographic evidence must be edited to show concise, clear evidence and reduce file size A professional standard of presentation for all submitted work is expected without spelling or grammatical errors. Timely completion is expected and errors must be corrected BTEC Computing Networks

Assessment Assignment number Pass reg. Merit req. Distinction req. Assignment ONE P1 describe the types of networks available and how they relate to particular network standards and protocols M1 compare the benefits and disadvantages of peer-to-peer network and client/server networks P2 describe why different network standards and protocols are necessary Assignment TWO P3 explain the key components required for client workstations to connect to a network and access network resources M2 design a networked solution to meet a particular situation with specific requirements D1 justify the design and choice of components used in a particular networked solution P4 explain the function of interconnection devices Assignment THREE P5 describe typical services provided by networks D2 evaluate typical services available from a network operating system directory service Assignment FOUR P6 make a networked system secure. M3 report on the business risks of insecure networks and how they can be minimised BTEC Computing Networks

Conclusion Discussed what will be covered in this Unit Discussed what a Computer Network is Considered the purpose of a computer network BTEC Computing Networks
