Open and Honest Communication We believe that…… All children are entitled to have their individual needs appropriately supported and met in order to achieve the highest possible standards and develop in all areas of the foundation stage (Early Years Foundation Stage, 2012) and that it is “unlawful” to treat a child “less favorable for a reason related to their disability”(Equality Act, 2010). Therefor every child is welcome at Adderley Children’s Centre What Ofsted say about us………. Children in Nursery make excellent progress and have already developed many important skills to make them effective learners. “Disabled children and those who have special educational needs are quickly identified” and… “extra help is specially focused” so that the children “make outstanding progress, particularly in becoming independent”. Open and Honest Communication Who can I talk to about my Child’s Special Educational Needs? Every child at Adderley Children’s Centre has a key worker who will support your child and ensure their individual needs are met. You will have the opportunity to speak to your child's key worker daily. Yvonne Spoors and Nicky Hinchliff are the Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCos). They work with children, teachers, parents and various agencies to ensure that children with special educational needs have their needs met. Open and Honest Communication What should I do if I have concerns about my Child? If you have any concerns please speak to your child’s key worker/ Class teacher or ask to speak to one of the SENCOs. What will happen if the Nursery have concerns about my child? We will speak to you directly and arrange a meeting with one of the SENCOs to discuss any concerns. What will happen next? The SENCO will assess your child’s needs through a range of strategies (see next page). You will be fully informed and involved in any decisions about your child

Open and Honest Communication How will the Nursery Identify and Assess my Child’s Special Educational needs? We use a variety of assessments to find out if your child has special Educational needs through the Graduated Approach & the Assess. Plan, Do, Review Model (as outlined in the Adderley Children’s Centre - Inclusion & Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy . Information is gained from…… key worker & other staff in weekly SEND meetings. you & your child School based assessments from previous setting external Agencies (e.g. Dr/ CDC/ Health Visitor) Observations

Open and Honest Communication How will I know what support my Child is getting? We are here to help you and your child get the best provision to meet his/her needs. We will always be honest when sharing information with you and will endeavour to answer any questions you raise. We encourage you to talk to your child’s key worker on a daily basis and regularly speak to the SENCo about all aspects of your child’s well being and development. You will be invited to attend termly meetings with the SENCo and key worker to discuss your child’s progress and be involved in identifying and setting new targets. Good communication and working together as a team is the key to ensuring your child gets the best provision to meet his/her needs.

Open and Honest Communication How will I know what Professionals are supporting my Child? Depending upon your child’s needs it may be necessary to get help from other professionals. No professional will become involved until it has been discussed with you and you have given permission. You will be invited to meet the professional/s and discuss your child’s needs with him/her/them. Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning How will the school provide appropriate and effective teaching for my child? The nursery ensure that all children, including those with Special Educational or Medical needs access quality first teaching through a broad, balanced and flexible curriculum. If your child requires additional support then identified interventions are put in place. This may involve some 1:1 support form the SEND team/ small group activities or specialised targeted work with other professionals (e.g. speech therapist). Activities are differentiated according to your child’s level of development. The nursery uses a range of strategies including visual timetables, Makaton signs, symbols and other resources to help enhance the learning. Please refer to Inclusion & Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy for further information.

Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning How do I know the staff are able to meet my child’s special educational needs? The staff at Adderley Children’s Centre regularly receive training to support children with Special Educational needs. The SENCo is responsible for ensuring that training is up to date and appropriate. Annually the staff have allergy/ asthma/ febrile convulsions & Epilepsy training All staff have received Tier 2 – AET Autism Training All staff have received ELDP (Early Language development programme) training Some staff have completed level 3 – ELKAN training – for language development Each year specific training is arranged to meet the needs of individual children. Each year specific training is provided according to the current cohort of children.

A Partnership Approach What professionals may become involved with my Child? Depending upon your child’s specific needs the nursery may make a referral, with your permission for outside support. These services may include Child Development Centre (CDC) Speech & language Therapist Access to Education Communication & Autism Team (CAT) Educational Psychologist (EPS) Sensory Support for Hearing or Visual Impairment (HI/ VI) Pupil & School Support (PSS) Occupational Therapist Physiotherapist Health Visitor & Community Nurse We have weekly support from a speech therapist and termly support from an Educational Psychologist. No professionals will be allowed to observe your child without your written consent.

A Partnership Approach What other support can I get from Adderley Children’s Centre? There is a Family Support team who can offer you help and support in a range of ways (e.g. applying for benefits/ housing issues) and also let you know about the various courses and classes that are available to access at the nursery (e.g. stay & play, pre & post natal classes, bumps & babies, English classes)
