What can I expect at Adderley Children’s Centre
if my child has special educational needs?

We believe that……
All children are entitled to have their individual needs appropriately supported and met in order to achieve the highest possible standards and develop in all areas of the foundation stage (Early Years Foundation Stage, 2012) and that it is “unlawful” to treat a child “less favorable for a reason related to their disability”(Equality Act, 2010).

Children in Nursery make excellent progress and have already developed many important skills to make them effective learners. “Disabled children and those who have special educational needs are quickly identified” and… “extra help is specially focused” so that the children “make outstanding progress, particularly in becoming independent”. Who can I talk to about my Child’s Special Educational Needs?
Every child has a key worker who will support your child and ensure their individual needs are met. You can speak to your child's key worker every day.
Yvonne Spoors is the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), Looked After Children (LAC)Champion and Early Support Champion. Yvonne works with children, teachers, parents and various agencies to ensure that children with special educational needs have their needs met.

What should I do if I have concerns about my Child?
speak to your child’s key worker/ Class teacher or ask to speak to Yvonne Spoors.
What will happen if the Nursery have concerns about my child?
We will speak to you directly and arrange a meeting with Yvonne to discuss any concerns.
What will happen next?
Yvonne and the staff will assess your child’s needs through a range of strategies (see next page).
You will be fully informed and involved in any decisions about your child

How will the Nursery Identify and Assess my Child’s Special Educational needs? We use a variety of assessments through the Graduated Approach & the Assess, Plan, Do, Review Model (as outlined in the Adderley Children’s Centre - Inclusion & Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy . How will I know what support my Child is getting?
We are here to help you and your child get the best.
We will be honest when sharing information with you and try to answer any questions you raise. Please talk to your child’s key worker every day and regularly speak to Yvonne Spoors (SENCo) about all aspects of your child’s well being and development.
You will be invited to attend termly meetings with the Yvonne Spoors (SENCo) and key worker to discuss your child’s progress and be involved in identifying and setting new targets.
Adderley Children's Centre is committed to providing all its users with high quality services and we aim to do so fairly and efficiently.  However there may be times where you feel that your expectations have not been met. Where this happens, our procedures aim to make it as easy as possible for users to submit a complaint (Access the Complaints Policy on the website )
Good communication and working together as a team is the key to ensuring your child gets the best provision to meet his/her needs.

How will I know what Professionals are supporting my Child?
It may be necessary to get help and advice from other professionals. No professional will become involved until it has been discussed with you and you have given permission. You will be invited to meet the professional/s and discuss your child’s needs with him/her/them.

8. Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning
How will the school provide appropriate and effective teaching for my child?
Nursery ensure that all children, including those with Special Educational or Medical needs access high quality teaching through a broad, balanced and flexible curriculum. If your child requires additional support then identified interventions are put in place. This may involve some targeted 1:1 support form the SEND team/ small group activities or specialised targeted work with other professionals (e.g. speech therapist). Activities are differentiated according to your child’s level of development.
The nursery uses a range of strategies including visual timetables, Makaton signs, symbols and other resources to help enhance the learning.

9. Appropriate & Effective Teaching and Learning
How do I know the staff are able to meet my child’s special educational needs?
Staff at Adderley Children’s Centre regularly receive training to support children with Special Educational needs. The Yvonne Spoors (SENCo) is responsible for ensuring that training is up to date and appropriate.
Annually the staff have allergy, asthma and any other appropriate training as needed.
All staff have received Tier 2 – AET Autism Training, some are Tier 3 – AET Autism trained.
All staff have received ELDP (Early Language development programme) training
Some staff have completed level 3 – ELKAN training – for language development
Each year specific training is arranged to meet the needs of individual children.
Each year specific training is provided according to the current cohort of children.

10. A Partnership Approach
What professionals may become involved with my Child?
Depending upon your child’s specific needs the Nursery may make a referral, with your permission for outside support. These services may include
Child Development Centre (CDC)
Speech & language Therapist
Access to Education
Communication & Autism Team (CAT)
Educational Psychologist (EPS)
Sensory Support for Hearing or Visual Impairment (HI/ VI)
Pupil & School Support (PSS)
Occupational Therapist
Physiotherapist
Health Visitor & Community Nurse
We have weekly support from a speech therapist and twice termly support from an Educational Psychologist.
No professionals will be allowed to observe your child without your written consent.

11. A Partnership Approach
What other support can I get from Adderley Children’s Centre?
There is a Family Support team who can offer help and support in a range of ways (e.g. applying for benefits/ housing issues/ parenting support) and also let you know about the various adult education courses and classes that are available to access at the nursery or at home(e.g. Stay & Play, Bumps & Babies, Bookstart, Acacia, English classes etc.).

12. A Partnership Approach
How does the nursery Support my child with Special Educational Needs through Transition?
We want your child to settle into nursery as smoothly as possible.
Before your child starts nursery we ……
When moving to a Primary/ Special or Resource Base School we…..
Come to your home to meet your child and find out all about his/ her needs.
Ask for any information from a previous setting or agency
Settle your child into nursery, taking into account his/ her needs
Invite the new school’s SENCo and class Teacher to come into nursery to find out all about your child.
We visit the new school and tell them what your child likes and what helps him/her learn
Talk to your child about their new school and help them settle with the use of visits/ photos etc.
