Solving word Problems

Challenge 1 The length of a rectangular window is 5 feet more than its width, w.  The perimeter of the window is 54 square feet.  - Write an equation which could be used to find the dimensions of the window?   - Find the width of the window.

Challenge 2 The length of a rectangular door is 5 feet less than three times the width. The perimeter of the door is 70 square feet. Write an equation that could be used to find the dimensions of the doors.  Find the width of the door.

Challenge 3 A school is building a rectangular soccer field that has a perimeter of 200 yards. The soccer field must be 40 yards longer than its width. Determine algebraically the dimensions of the soccer field, in yards first then feet

Challenge 4 A landscaper is creating a rectangular flower bed such that the width is one third of the length. The perimeter of the flower bed is 16 square feet. Write and solve an equation to determine the width of the flower bed in inches.

Challenge 5 A school building is undergoing renovations. The school building that was originally a square is being adjusted so that one side is 3 times in length, while the other side is decreased by one meter. The new rectangular school building will have the same perimeter as the original building. Write an equation that could be used to determine the length of a side of the school building.  Calculate the dimensions.

A rectangular garden measuring 12 meters by 16 meters is to have a walkway installed around it with a width of x meters, as shown in the diagram below. Together, the walkway and the garden have a perimeter of 152 meters. Write an equation that can be used to find x, the width of the walkway, then determine and state the width of the walkway, in inches. Challenge 6
