Standing up for our beliefs

Todays Gospel reading Gospel: Luke 19:45-48 Jesus drives traders from the temple. The hierarchy wants to destroy him but the people treasured his words Then Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer’; but you have made it a den of robbers.” Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him; but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were spellbound by what they heard.

What does this mean for us today? Watch me! Jesus had the confidence to stand up for what he believed in. Are you excited by the opportunity to change yourself, your community, the world?

Who was Martin Luther King? Martin Luther King was a Christian. He became a Minister in Alabama, America. From an early age he was aware that black people were not treated as equal citizens in America. Black people earned half that of the average white man, they could not vote, they lived in poor areas and were segregated (separated in public places). Martin Luther King strongly believed the only way to achieve equal rights of black people in America was through non-violent means and peaceful forms of protest. His Christian beliefs told him that violence and hatred could only be conquered by love and forgiveness.

What did Martin Luther King do? ‘I have a dream speech’ "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character."  Martin Luther King

What did Martin Luther King do? He was one of the main leaders of the American civil rights movements. He organised freedom marches and protests. He campaigned for equal rights for black people. ‘I Have a Dream’ speech – gave people hope. His message and actions gave black people a voice. 1964 – awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Heavenly Father, I look up to you in this time of change Heavenly Father, I look up to you in this time of change. Allow me to have the courage to change my life for the better. Allow all my burdens to be risen up to you as I know that You will see me through. Forgive those who have done evil and allow me to do the same. Teach me to love with an open heart and open spirit. Take time for me today to help with all the trials you have set out for me and allow me the strength and energy to follow you. Amen
