Publix Group 7: Tyler Naquin, William Tyler, Andrew Halphen, Devan Baham, Denton Thomas

Environment Over 1,100 stores in Florida Publix was one of the first stores to open after Hurricane Matthew Emergency response plans are vital to the success of Publix

Growth of Publix Stores

DHS’s Emergency Response Plan Evacuation and Safety Life safety – making sure employees know where exits are and how to use them Emergency exits are already covered by state building codes Making sure employees know how to act in an emergency situation Likely that Publix uses these plans as well as incorporates fire safety by designing fire-safe buildings

Components of incident stabilization Having plans for Firefighting Administering Medical Treatment Rescue Containing a Spill of Hazardous Chemicals Handling a Threat or Act of Violence

How Publix Prepares

Biggest Threat: Hurricanes Majority of stores in Florida $1,200-$10,000 in storm preparations pre-hurricane That number range is before any damage occurs However, these precautions allow Publix to hit the market early than other stores after a disaster, benefiting their sales and market share

DHS’s Resource Management Must account all Inventory Building assets Employees Other intangible assets that can be damaged in a natural disaster In order for Publix to stay ahead, they must have back up suppliers to ensure that the stores have product to sell Bonus of opening soon after storms – perishables can be sold instead of wasted

Hurricane Damage Can knock out power lines and cause structural damage to buildings and homes Temporary closures can be very expensive and become a major loss of revenue Employees must also be protected in a natural disaster Great Employee Culture Expensive to train new employees Additionally, Publix has employees on stand-by and aids those employees who lose their homes

DHS’s Crisis Communication Plan In order to save business in the time of a crisis, communication is KEY Communication with employees on the store reopening and the alerting the general public of a reopening help make up profits for sales lost during an emergency closure Publix uses email alerts, radio ads, and websites to inform customers of reopenings

DHS’s Business Continuity Plan Common misconception that insurance covers all damage in a fire or hurricane Publix has a business continuity plan Implore business impact analysis to forecast fallouts from the disruption of business with a process for recovery strategies Toll free line for employees to call in during an emergency Installed 500 kilowatt generators at the majority of Publix in Florida Automatic turn on sensors to keep lighting, air conditioning, and refrigerators on at all times

Concluded Publix is one of the fastest growing grocery stores in the US The majority of Publix stores are located in Florida, home to a very busy hurricane season In order to prepare for Hurricanes and other natural disasters, Publix has an emergency response, resource management, crisis communication, and business continuity plan Publix is able to be the first on the market in Florida after major natural disasters Publix also does a good job of keeping its products from becoming spoiled during a natural disaster
