What Makes Latin America a Region?

CULTURE Blending of people Native Americans Many native American cultural features still exist today; shared culture Spanish and Portuguese settlers; Spanish settled for gold and silver Africans first came to Latin America in 1500’s; brought forcibly to work sugarcane and other cash crop plantations.

LANGUAGES Major factor in bringing together diverse ethnic groups Spanish is primary language Brazil-Portuguese Haiti-French Jamaica and Belize-English Many countries speak dialect that is unique to their group

THE ARTS Blends European style with native American culture Weaving, woodcarving, pottery, colored murals Brazilian samba and Cuban salsa Futbol
