Bachelor of Laws for School-Leavers New 4 Year Degree Natalie Klein Dean, Macquarie Law School

2013 Offerings at Macquarie Law School Combined LLB programs Distance LLB program Age requirement of 21 years, part time only, distance Graduate LLB For students already holding a Bachelors degree; available internally and by distance

What Stays (Mostly) the Same… All of the combined degree programs Though they will now be called double degree programs There are no changes to the LLB component of these degrees Internal pathways will exist between the double degree and single degree programs

What is Changing The graduate LLB will no longer be available Last intake: Session 3, 2013-14 A Juris Doctor will begin as a postgraduate degree in law, replacing the graduate LLB The distance LLB as a distinct program will become part of the new 4 year LLB program No age requirement Part time or full time

The New 4 yr LLB Essentially made up of the existing 72cp LLB, with the addition of a 24 cp qualifying major Seven qualifying majors available Allows for a focus on law, but has the advantage of rounding out legal studies with addition of units from other areas to ensure a broader, contextual understanding of the law

Our LLB Program Comprised of 15 compulsory units, 9 electives Includes units required for admission to practice International Law PACE LAW115 is assessed on pass / fail basis to ensure students gain skills needed at outset These skills and capabilities are scaffolded throughout program Electives cover diverse areas of law

Why Macquarie? Still provides interdisciplinarity, but a shorter time commitment overall PACE is still required Available internal or by distance Though not entirely online; there are compulsory oncampus sessions for each unit Available full time or part time Rather than two undergraduate degrees in 5 years, students can do the LLB and potentially a 1 year Masters program

Compared to other Sydney universities No equivalents at UNSW or USyd UTS does straight LLB, which includes practical legal training requirements, but not the breadth of studies UWS has a straight LLB, but without a defined major so no distinct pathways beyond law and so more narrow

Entry Requirements for LLB programs No prerequisite study at high school ATAR for double degree programs are 95-96 No advertised ATAR for the new 4 year LLB program, but anticipating 97

Pathways – Pre-Law Quota Admission to the ‘Pre-Law’ Pathway allows students in non-law degrees to undertake introductory law units as a pathway to the Bachelor of Laws. Students approved for entry to the pre-law pathway will have waivers loaded to allow enrolment in LAW115, LAW104, LAW108, and LAW109. Upon satisfactory completion of these four units, students may then apply to transfer into either the Bachelor of Laws (96cp Single Award) or a Double Degree with Bachelor of Laws, subject to meting the transfer requirements set out below.

Pathways – Pre-Law Quota New Students (commencing their studies at Macquarie in 2014) who have been admitted to a non-law degree at Macquarie University can apply for admission to the pre-law pathway prior to their first semester of studies if they meet the following criteria: Minimum ATAR to be established each year. For 2014 intake the minimum ATAR will be 93. Existing Students already enrolled in a non-law degree at Macquarie must meet the following criteria for entry to the Pre-Law Pathway: 24cp of non-law units including LEX101 or LEX102 GPA 3.0

Transfers between Programs Subject to program requirements, students will be able to transfer between the single LLB to a double degree and from the double degree to the single degree Which one to choose at the start? 4 yr LLB if set on being a lawyer Double degree if want more flexibility around choice of units to study
