Modernising Scientific Careers: Introduction Introduction Career and Training Pathway New and novel roles

Healthcare Scientists Healthcare science workforce accounts for approx 4% of NHS workforce, spanning from consultant clinical scientists to support workers Around 3.3k of 90k staff in NHS Wales 50% life sciences 30% Physiological sciences 20% Physics and engineering Healthcare scientists play a major role in the delivery of patient care. They contribute to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a huge number of medical conditions as well playing a key role in rehabilitation. Along with doctors, nurses and other professionals, healthcare scientists are an essential part of today’s healthcare team.

Biomedical Scientists What professions do the healthcare scientists include? Life Sciences and Genetics Anatomical pathology Blood transfusion Clinical biochemistry including Paediatric Metabolic Biochemistry Cytogenetics Embryology Iimmunology Cytopathology & cervical cytology Electron microscopy External Quality Assurance Haematology Haemostasis & thrombosis Histocompatibility & immunogenetics Histopathology Microbiology Molecular genetics Phlebotomy Tissue Banking Toxicology Physiological Sciences Audiology Autonomic neurovascular function Cardiac physiology Clinical perfusion Critical Care Technology Gastrointestinal physiology Neurophysiology Ophthalmic & vision science Respiratory physiology Sleep Physiology Urodynamics Vascular technology Clinical engineering and Physical Sciences Biomedical engineering Clinical measurement Diagnostic Radiology & MRI Equipment management & clinical engineering Maxillofacial prosthetics and reconstruction Medical electronics and instrumentation Medical illustration Nuclear medicine Radiopharmacy Radiation protection and monitoring Radiotherapy physics Rehabilitation engineering Renal Science and Technology Regulation Biomedical Scientists & Clinical Scientists
