Mission Santa Barbara was founded in Dec. 4,1786 by Father Lausen Mission Santa Barbara was founded in Dec.4,1786 by Father Lausen. It was used as a mission from 1786-1843.It was the tenth mission built in California.

Mission Santa Barbara was located on 2201 Laguna Street in the resort town of Santa Barbara.

Father Serra Father Serra died in 1784,but he was the founder of the first 9 missions. He was educated by Franciscans. Father Serra was in his mid-50s when he founded the first mission in what is today the area of San Diego.

Missionaries Two missionaries headed to mission Santa Barbara, and several Spanish soldiers worked for them. While the friars never gained financially from the Indians work, the missionaries did have to make sure the neophytes learned a trade

Native Americans Women They gathered fruits, nuts, herbs, and veggies, and they wore skirts made of antelope hide or deer skin that reached their knees. After picking acorns they would ground the material into flour.

Native Americans Men They hunted for food such as fish and other small animals. They usually went around naked, but when it was colder they wore coats that reached their waist.

Native Americans Children Boys They were taught by elders to hunt and make tools. Girls They learned to weave baskets and to make food by elders.

Daily Life A day for the neophytes always started at sunrise when everyone went to the church to pray and sing. The Chumash neophytes daily routine varied little from day to day. One bell rang when it was time to pray or have devotions.

Hardships There where mostly civil problems. Neophytes started a revolt, and soldiers from the presidio marched on the Indians threatingly. The biggest problem though was the threat of diseases.

Interesting Facts Santa Barbara was established on the feast of St.Barbara on Dec.4,1782.There were three adobe churches here, one larger than the other.Chusam leaders such as Chief Yanonali became Christians, the Franciscans introduced agriculture to the Indians.

Conclusion My conclusion is that Mission Santa Barbara is an interesting and wonderful mission that I think you would love.
