Navigating the Change into Career Smooth Transitions… Navigating the Change into Career

Clinicians, University Counseling Center A little about us… Brenna Renn, BA Jesie Steffes, BA Juliana Hill, BA Clinicians, University Counseling Center Main Hall Room 324 719-255-3265

What to Expect … …from the transition: Role Change: accommodation of loss. Anxiety: fears of next “season” of life. Expectations: lofty or unrealistic. Perception of Self-Efficacy: doubts on strengths.

Taking Inventory Will your first job be your last? Are you willing to relocate? What does your life “look like?” (ie. Partner? Children? State bound career?)

Finding Your Fit What are your values concerning a future career? Does prestige play into your decision making? How will your “personality” play into your career? (trait and factor theory)

The Little Things in Life Self Care! How will you make time for your hobbies? Maintaining groups of friends…don’t get swallowed by the business world. Make time to be social.

How to Deal Reframing Role Change as New Beginning Anxiety as Excitement Fears as Possibilities

How to Deal cont. Look at this as an adjustment, not only a loss. Keep the big picture in mind. Make smaller goals along the road. Turn your anxiety into excitement. Reflect on your strengths: where have you been successful before?

How to Deal cont. Prioritizing a plan Reframing Know “where you stand” (let success come vs. go out and hunt it) Encourage self-care (maintaining hobbies, etc. )

Where’s your career development?

How aware are you about your career and vocational goals? To be or not to be…aware How aware are you about your career and vocational goals?

Lack of Awareness Undecided about career. Confused about the process of career exploration. Limited knowledge of work and what “reality” in many occupations looks like. Undecided about occupations they might enjoy. Individual’s strengths and weaknesses may be unknown.

Awareness! Begin a PROCESS of self-assessment. Investigating interests, abilities, and values. Gathering information about vocational possibilities that blend with their personal characteristics.
