Identify opportunities to apply for How can we help? The Graduate School aims to support students in all stages of applying for grant, scholarship, and fellowship support. I’ll touch on resources designed to help you: Identify opportunities to apply for Prepare written materials, such as personal statements and research proposals. Identify experts, award recipients, and advisors who can provide important feedback and advice.

Identifying Opportunities On Campus: University-sponsored awards: http://gradschool.utah.edu/tbp/graduate-fellowship-opportunities/ https://gradschool.utah.edu/diversity/ Department/College awards and assistantships: Consult with your department/college.

Identifying Opportunities External Awards U of U Graduate School list (work-in-progress): http://gradschool.utah.edu/tbp/external-opportunities/ U of U Graduate Diversity External Fellowship List https://gradschool.utah.edu/diversity/external-fellowships/ University of Chicago Graduate Fellowships Database https://grad.uchicago.edu/fellowships/fellowship-database Science Mag Resource: http://www.sciencemag.org/careers/where-search-funding NIH Search Tool: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm Cornell Search Tool: http://gradschool.cornell.edu/fellowships University of Illinois Graduate Fellowships Search Tool: https://www.grad.illinois.edu/fellowship/

Identifying Opportunities External Awards The Graduate School supplies a list of known upcoming scholarship and fellowship deadlines and workshops to Directors of Graduate Studies and Graduate Advisors each semester. Check with your grad advisor if you’re not receiving the list and would like to, OR sign up on our website for email digests of upcoming opportunities, as well as workshops and related events on campus: http://gradschool.utah.edu/graduate-funding-success-workshops/

Identifying Opportunities It may be daunting to consider applying for these external awards, but we have found that University of Utah students are competitive nationally and among the PAC-12. Your chances increase the moment you apply! Example: Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Prior to 2015, the Fulbright Program was not advertised among U students, and few were aware of it. The University submitted a handful of applications each year, and won very few awards: 0-1 per year. After making students aware and increasing application attempts to ~15 per year, the University of Utah’s applicant success rate increased to around 30%. We have found that our students are competitive applicants - once they decide to apply!

Workshops and Training Start Early! It takes time to craft a successful application, and it’s difficult to go it alone. Attend workshops, get feedback from everyone, and revise, revise, revise! Upcoming Graduate Funding Success Workshops: Additional sessions coming up in the fall – stay in touch at http://gradschool.utah.edu/graduate-funding-success-workshops/

Workshops and Training Workshop: Getting Your Fellowship Funded Intensive, hands-on workshop led by Professors Mansour and Schoenwolf 6 Sessions: Thursdays 1-4 pm, Sept. 7-Nov. 16 (skipping every other week to allow time for writing/revision) with NRSA (or equivalent submission) in December, 2017 Limited to 12 participants, with Postdocs having priority, and Graduate Students, as space allows Contact: smansour@genetics.utah.edu &/or schoenwolf@neuro.utah.edu
