Telling a story…. We are going to take a written description about a chemical reaction and transfer it into a balanced chemical equation !

Writing Chemical Equations Identify reactants, write chemical formulas. Identify products, write chemical formulas. Write the complete chemical equation. 4) Balance the equation.

Example 1: Copper (II) carbonate  copper (II) oxide + carbon dioxide

Example 2: Lead (III) nitrate + potassium iodide  potassium nitrate + lead iodide

Example 3: Gandalf and Elrond combine aluminum metal and copper (II) sulfate by placing the metal into a solution of copper (II) sulfate. This reaction forms aluminum sulfate and copper metal. Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction. We will actually do this reaction in lab on Thursday !

Example 4: Merry and Pippin find lead (II) chloride and lithium sulfate in Gandalf’s chemical supply cabinet. They combine these chemical compounds and then run to Gandalf so he may identify the produced chemical compounds. Gandalf identifies the compounds as lead (II) sulfate and lithium chloride.

Practice 1) Aluminum bromide + calcium nitrate  aluminum nitrate + calcium bromide. 2) Zinc bromide reacts with silver nitrate to produce zinc nitrate and silver bromide. 3) Lithium oxide combines with water to form lithium hydroxide.

Try this one…. Sodium and water combine to give sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Diatomic elements Bromine (Br2) Chlorine (Cl2) Fluorine (F2) Hydrogen (H2) Iodine (I2) Nitrogen (N2) Oxygen (O2)

Example 5 A chemist at a Wake Forest chemistry lab prepares a potassium bromide solution dissolved in water to react with chlorine gas. This reaction produces bromine in the liquid state and potassium chloride in solution. Another worksheet.

Example 6: Hydrogen gas combines with oxygen gas to give water.

Example 7: Hydrochloric acid (HCl) in solution combines with sodium hydroxide in solution to give solid sodium chloride and water.
