CompTIA Server+ Certification (Exam SK0-004) 3.3 Volume Management

Troubleshoot storage and volume availability problems Use disk management tools to mount volumes and maintain the file system Troubleshoot storage and volume availability problems The number in the bottom right corner of the slides refers back to the page where this topic starts in the course book. 3.3 Volume Management

Disk Management Tool 3.3 Volume Management

Initialize Disk New disk must be initialized before Disk Manager can access it For a blank disk, choose between MBR and GPT partition styles 3.3 Volume Management

Configuring a Partition Alt-click in unpartitioned space to create new partition Choose size, drive letter, and file system 3.3 Volume Management

Adding Arrays (Dynamic Storage) Configure software RAID using dynamic disks Spanned (JBOD) Striped (RAID 0) Mirrored (RAID 1) RAID 5 3.3 Volume Management

Managing a Mirrored Array Break mirror Leave volume intact on both disks Remove mirror Delete the mirrored volume from one disk Converting back to basic disk 3.3 Volume Management

Mount Points Access a volume via the file system of another volume File system of host volume must be NTFS Volume must be hosted in an empty folder 3.3 Volume Management

Drive Status Disks Volumes / partitions Online Not Initialized Unreadable Foreign Offline / Missing Volumes / partitions Healthy Failed Formatting 3.3 Volume Management

Windows Disk Utilities Check Disk Defragmenter Disk Cleanup 3.3 Volume Management

Linux Disk Utilities fdisk / parted / gdisk mdadm / Logical Volume Manager (LVM) mkfs fsck mount /etc/fstab 3.3 Volume Management

Troubleshooting Storage Symptoms Bad sectors Data corruption Cannot mount drive / access logical drive Constant LED activity Noise Issues Hard disk not accessible Configuration File system structure 3.3 Volume Management

Troubleshooting RAID Detecting failed drive / array degraded Replace missing disk as quickly as possible Rebuilding can reduce performance though Cache / cache battery failures Mismatched drives Backplane failure 3.3 Volume Management

Troubleshooting Disk Performance It’s not always the disk itself... Network not disks? Background processes? RAID cache tuning? Low disk space? Protocol / software problem? Drive / controller firmware? Paging? Malware / faulty process? 3.3 Volume Management

Troubleshoot storage and volume availability problems Use disk management tools to mount volumes and maintain the file system Troubleshoot storage and volume availability problems What two options does Windows have for making a volume available? Mapping to a drive letter or mounting the volume within a folder. A user reports that they cannot access a shared volume mounted on a Windows server. What should you do? Use the Disk Management utility to investigate the status of the volume. True or false? The Disk Management tool lets you see which volumes are low on free space. True - free space and utilization is shown in the top panel. What Windows utility would you use to identify bad sectors? Check Disk (chkdsk /r) If you have created a partition on a removable drive in Linux, what command would you use to make it available as a volume? The mount command. With what type of disk or interface would "Improper termination" be an issue? Parallel SCSI. What command could you use to verify the partition structure of a disk in Linux? fdisk. What are the two main risks from cache failure on a RAID controller? Slow performance and data corruption. 3.3 Volume Management
