“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” Matthew 5:8 08/22/2010 Dr. Dane Boyles

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” THE STUBBORN HEART 5 The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. (Genesis 6:5)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” 18 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God (Matt. 5:8). Questions: Who are the pure in heart? Why will they see God? How will they see God? How pure is my heart and yours?

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” Christ-like people have: desperate hearts broken hearts surrendered hearts hungry hearts tender hearts

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” To Be Pure in Heart The heart is the seat of human personality. 7 Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart … (Proverbs 3:5) 11 God has set eternity in the human heart. (Eccl. 3:11)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) 10 for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified. (Romans 10:10)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” What does it mean to be pure in heart? To be free from impurities. To not be a mixture of things.

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” Undivided describes a pure heart. There is no compartmentalization. The thing you want is God.

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” CLEAN BUT DIRTY 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” (Matt. 15:1-2)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” They were concerned about defilement. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips,       but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain;       their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ ” (Matt. 15:7-9)

Matthew 15:7-9, The Message “These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn’t in it. They act like they are worshiping me, but they don’t mean it.”

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” 12 “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” (Matt. 15:12) Jesus was questioning the most fundamental and widely accepted spiritual practices of his day.

Matthew 15:16-18 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’

Matthew 15:19-20 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’ ”

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” AN ECHOCARDIAGRAM Murder? Adultery or sexual immorality? Theft? False testimony? Slander?

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” An Undivided Heart What about the compartmentalization? God’s money or your money. God’s time or your time. God’s will or your will. God’s glory or your glory.

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” YOU’LL SEE GOD 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (Matt. 5:8) The pure in heart will see God in the life to come.

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” 2. When your life is about God, you see God everywhere. 8 You’re blessed when you get your inside world put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. (Matt. 5:8)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” How Do We Get this Kind of Heart? We ask for it. 9 if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

“Blessed Are the Pure in Heart” We ask him to change our hearts. 19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 11:19)
