What data says… Nearly half (44%) of all households in major American cities are financially vulnerable—without assets or adequate savings to cover basic expenses for even three months in the event of an emergency, such as a job loss or health crisis. The inability to bounce back from financial pitfalls is not only a detriment to families but also to the economic growth of the cities in which they live. http://localdata.assetsandopportunity.org/about

In a scale of 1 to 10, how well do you manage your money?

What is Family Engagement? How does it look when a family is engaged?

National Standards for Family Engagement Welcoming all families into the school community (active participants; feel welcome and valued) Communicating effectively (two-way, meaningful communication) Supporting student success (collaboration to support students’ learning and healthy development both at school and at home) Speaking up for every child (families empowered to be advocates for our children) Sharing power (equal partners in decisions that affect children & families) Collaborating with the community (collaborate to connect students, families, and staff to expand opportunities and community services)

Family Engagement in Family Financial Literacy Make it fun! Create a way for families to share their experiences with others Invite community agencies to provide financial workshops Promote the financial literacy message throughout your center Consider the family culture and language

The Importance of Family Engagement Family engagement in education is related to a range of benefits for students, including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and increased likelihood of high school graduation. The strongest research evidence indicates that parental beliefs, attitudes, values, and childrearing practices, as well as homeschool communication, are linked to student success. (Harvard Family Research Project)
