Each star represents a US state.

Grand Union Flag(1775) The Grand Union Flag was an early American flag that was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1775. It was first flown in December, 1775, by the Colonial fleet of ships. On land, it was first flown on January 1,1776, at George Washington’s camp near Boston, Massachusetts.

The Flag of the U.S.A. As new states were admitted to the USA, more stars were added to the flag. The current US flag was adopted on July 4, 1960, a few months after Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state of the USA.

The Star Spangled Banner Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 after he saw a US flag still flying after a battle with the British (during the war of 1812). It became the US National Anthem in 1931.
