READING Read accurately most words of two or more syllables e.g. rainbow, monkey, butterfly Read most words containing common suffixes e.g. –ing, -ed, - est. making, baked, kindest Read most common exception words e.g. people, looked, called

Read words accurately and fluently without overt sounding and blending. Sound out most unfamiliar words accurately ,without too much hesitation. Check that their reading makes sense. Answer questions and make some inference on the basis of what is being said and done e.g. Where was the story set? Who were the characters? What words would you use to describe the main character? What does this tell us about how they are feeling?

WRITING Use capital letters and full stops in most sentences with some use of exclamation marks and question marks. Use different sentence forms in their writing e.g. command(Go and get the bags), statement (The boy was running), question (Have you been swimming?) and exclamation (I don’t believe it!). Use expanded noun phrases to describe e.g. ‘the girl’ would become ‘the tall girl’. Use past and present tense mostly accurately and consistently.

Use co-ordination e. g. or, and, but subordination e. g Use co-ordination e.g. or, and, but subordination e.g. when, if, that, because in their writing. Apply their phonic knowledge to develop accuracy in spelling. Spell many common exception words. Spell words using the contracted form e.g. can’t, don’t, they’re.

MATHEMATICS Add two digit numbers within 100 using informal written jottings, apparatus or pictures. e.g. 48+35 Partition two digit numbers into tens and ones using mathematical apparatus. e.g. 23 is the same as 2 tens and 3 ones which is the same as 1 ten and 13 ones.

Subtract mentally a two digit number from another two digit number when there is no grouping e.g. 74-33 Estimate to check that their answers to a calculation are accurate and reasonable. e.g. know that 48+35 will be less than 100

Recognise the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations. e.g. ___ - 14 = 28 is the same as 28 + 14 = _____ Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2,5 and 10 multiplication tables to solve simple problems. e.g. know they can make 7 groups of 5 from 35. 35 ÷ 5 = 7. Sharing 40 cherries between 10 people. 40 ÷ 10 = 4. Know the value of six 5p coins. 6 x 5p = 30p

Recognise simple fractions and know that all must be parts of an equal whole. e.g. one third, one quarter, one half, two halves, three quarters. Use different coins to make the same amount. e.g. use coins to make 50p in different ways. Work out how many £2 coins are needed to exchange for a £20 note.

Read the time to the nearest 15 minutes. Read scales in divisions of ones, twos, fives and tens. e.g. able to read capacities using measuring jugs and thermometers.

Describe properties of 2d and 3d shapes. e.g. A triangle has 3 sides, 3 vertices and 1 line of symmetry. A pyramid has 8 edges, 5 faces, 4 of which are triangles and one is a square.
