Themes in the Study of Life
Scientific Method The process of science in every day life.
Scientific Method Vocabulary Terms
 We are going to design an experiment to test paper airplane flight distance.  We need to think about how we are going to design and perform the experiment.
What is the scientific method?
Scientific Method.
Processes of Science. Designing an Experiment Typically begins with observations that lead to a question Tests a hypothesis (prediction) Collect information.
Scientific Methodology One Goal of Science is to provide natural explanations for events in the natural world Then, use those explanations to understand.
Experimental Components Experiment to test hypothesis *overall question* Control Experiment- This experiment includes what you are comparing.
Design Detective Analyze each scenario at each station. Identify the variables: Independent variable, Dependent variable and Constants, and write a hypothesis.
Highlight: Scientists use many methods in their research, such as descriptive investigation, simple mathematical and engineering modeling and design, and.

Scientist think and talk Language of Science * Are you hyperactive or hypoactive today? Thinking about thinking What are the numbers on the bottom of the.
Variables Designing a fair experiment. What is a Variable? Scientists design experiments in which changes to one item cause something else to change in.
SCIENTIFIC METHOD. SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY  A Process that involves many steps to complete an inquiry.
What is science? Science is a way to learn about the natural world.
Bio Jumpstart: Jackie read that Aloe vera promoted healing of burned tissue. She decided to investigate the effect of varying amounts of aloe.
What is the first step of the scientific method? What is a hypothesis? What is a scientific law? How does induction differ from deduction? Catalyst.

Essential Question #1 BIOLOGY BIOLOGY Mr. Mann. What is Biology? Bio- = life -ology = study The study of living organisms and how they interact in nature.
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. Types of variables: 2. dependent variable: 1.independent variable: Variable that is changed in an experiment. What is being investigated.
The Scientific Method. Step 1: Observations Information that you get with your five senses or tools Example: This chalkboard is green Information that.

Syllabus and Lab Safety

Your Assignment: Obtain and bring in your classroom supplies Sign and return the paper stating you and your parent/guardian have read and understand both the syllabus and the lab safety contract These are worth a grade and must ALL be turned in at the same time

DISCUSSION What do you remember about the scientific method?

Scientific Method Refresher What is the effect of compost age (independent variable) on the growth of bean plants (dependent variable)? What is the effect of compost age (independent variable) on the growth of bean plants (dependent variable)? What is the effect of compost age (independent variable) on the growth of bean plants (dependent variable)? Scientific Method Refresher PROCEDURE MUST INCLUDE: Independent Variable The part of the experiment that “I” change Dependent Variable The part of the experiment that is changing due to the independent variable Constants/Control Variables Everything that is kept the same during an experiment Control Group The group that the independent variable is compared to Data Table The data table should include the independent variable and the dependent variable Qualitative Data: DESCRIPTIONS **Quantitative Data: NUMBERS What is the effect of (independent variable) on the (dependent variable)? If (independent variable), then the (dependent variable) will … Make a Graph

Scientific Method Practice Sarah wanted to test the effect of coffee grounds on the growth of tomato plants. She gathered 4 identical tomato plants and placed them into 4 identical pots with 100g of soil in each pot. Sarah added the following amounts of coffee grounds to the pots: Pot 1: 0g; Pot 2: 5g; Pot 3: 10g; Pot 4: 15g. She watered the plants the same amount each day and measured the growth of the plants every day for 30 days. Identify: Dependent Variable, Independent Variable, Constants/Control Variables, Control Group. Write: Question, Hypothesis Construct: Data Table

Scientific Method Practice Jackie read that Aloe vera promoted healing on burned tissue. She decided to investigate the effect of various amounts of Aloe vera on the regeneration of planaria. She bisected the planaria to obtain 10 parts (5 heads and 5 tails) for each experimental group. She applied concentrations of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% Aloe vera to the groups. Fifteen mL of Aloe vera solutions were applied. All planaria were maintained in a growth chamber with identical food, temperature, and humidity. On day 15, Jackie observed the regeneration of the planaria parts and categorized development as full, partial, or none. Identify: Dependent Variable, Independent Variable, Constants/Control Variables, Control Group. Write: Question, Hypothesis Construct: Data Table
