Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy Hymn # 486 Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, Full of pity, love, and power. Hart, Joseph / Traditional American melody; Walker’s Southern Harmony © Public Domain ARR UBP – CCLI License No. 378119

I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh.

I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth Is to feel your need of Him.

I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry ‘til you’re better, You will never come at all.

I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms.

Blessed are the Poor in Spirit Matthew 5:3 The pursuit of happiness is an inalienable right in the Declaration of Independence, but is not in the Bible The successes of our American forefathers was due to influence of Biblical principles upon them

Blessed verses Happy Happy: Fortunate, Felicitous, joyous, pleasant, glad, pleased - these require desirable circumstances Happiness must be pursued because it is fleeting - and that pursuit can lead to sin The pursuit of happiness is sinful when it is done at the expense of loving God - 2 Timothy 3:4

Blessed verses Happy God wants us to avoid sin and having something better than happiness Blessed = makavrioV / makarios - the state of the gods, internally generated, transcendent of circumstances

God's Blessedness vs. the World's Happiness Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Happy are the proud, for they will gain their own kingdom Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted Happy are the celebrating, for they will laugh

God's Blessedness vs. the World's Happiness Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth Happy are the assertive and the mighty, for they will take over the earth Blessed are those hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied Happy are those who hunger & thirst after mammon, for they gain success for themselves

God's Blessedness vs. the World's Happiness Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy Happy are the vengeful, for no one will dare cross them Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God Happy are the sly and cunning, for they shall gain profit

God's Blessedness vs. the World's Happiness Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God Happy are the trouble-makers, for they will have others do their bidding Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Happy are the persecutors, for they will get respect

Context & The Beatitudes Jesus has already had significant ministry in teaching, healing and casting our demons - drawing multitudes The religious leaders already see Jesus as a threat and are antagonistic toward Him

Context & The Beatitudes Many, if not most, are wondering if Jesus is the Messiah - and when would His kingdom begin? Theme: Your righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees to enter the kingdom of heaven Each beatitude is a statement of fact, not a conditional phrase

Context & The Beatitudes Christians are part of Christ’s kingdom (Col. 1:3; Phil. 3:20), so these should be characteristics of believers All people inherit a sin nature, but Jesus came to break sin’s bondage enabling them to live righteously Your natural temperament makes some things easy and others difficult, but none are righteous on their own

The Nature of Poverty of Spirit Matthew 5:3 should govern the interpretation of Luke 6:20 if they are referencing the exact same teaching The only advantage of the poor is being able to more easily recognize their need and seek help

The Nature of Poverty of Spirit Poor = ptwcovV / ptochos - destitute, begging poor - Luke 16:20 Luke 21:1-4, vs. 2 “poor widow” = penicrovV /penichros - has no property and must earn a living by work vs. 3-4, “poor widow” = ptwcovV / ptochos who is in poverty = uJstevrhma / husterāma - no resources

The Nature of Poverty of Spirit Poor = destitute, nothing to offer in trade or service, only hope is to beg for mercy and grace No hope except in the character of God to come to Him humbly and beg for mercy and grace

The Nature of Poverty of Spirit This is a principle from the Hebrew Scriptures - Isaiah 57:15; Isaiah 66:2 Humble men: Moses (Ex 3-4), David (2 Sam 7:18), Isaiah (6:5), Peter (Lk 5:8), Jesus Himself (Jn 5:19-30)

“It means a complete absence of pride, a complete absence of self-assurance and of self-reliance. It means a consciousness that we are nothing in the presence of God. It is nothing, then, that we can produce; it is nothing that we can do in ourselves. It is just this tremendous awareness of our utter nothingness as we come face to face with God.” - D. Martyn Lloyd Jones

The Necessity of Poverty of Spirit Luke 18:9-14 - The Pharisee boasted in his own righteousness The publican humbly begged God to be merciful to him, the sinner - and was justified

The Necessity of Poverty of Spirit Psalm 51 - God wants us to come to Him with a broken spirit and a contrite heart Prov. 16:5 - pride is an abomination for the proud will not admit their sin and yield to Christ

The Blessing of Poverty of Spirit The humble accept God’s gift of salvation on God’s terms and enter God’s kingdom Being under the King’s jurisdiction, by His power He cares and provides - Matt. 6:33 God equips with spiritual gifts and empowers you to serve Him - a plan and purpose for life now & forever

Becoming Poor in Spirit Get your eyes off of yourself and on God by reading His word and seeking Him with all your heart The Bible confronts you with God’s character & attributes - resulting in awe of Him and disdain for yourself The Bible convicts you of sin through God’s holy law - which all fail at keeping

Becoming Poor in Spirit Those who recognize the wretchedness of their sin mourn and weep over it and humble seek God’s mercy Psalm 51 - seek the Lord with all your heart asking Him to create in you a clean heart and steadfast spirit The Christian should become more humble because they know better the depth of their sin & God’s grace

1 Peter 5:5 / James 4:6,10 - the poor in spirit will humble themselves before God and enter His kingdom The proud remain in their own kingdom within the domain of darkness and excluded from God’s kingdom

I want You forever to live in my soul. Whiter Than Snow #653 Lord Jesus, I long To be perfectly whole; I want You forever to live in my soul. James Nicholson / William G. Fischer - Public Domain CCLI License No. 378119

Now wash me and I shall be Break down every idol, Cast out every foe - Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow, yes, Whiter than snow – Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

From Your throne in the skies Lord Jesus, look down From Your throne in the skies And help me to make A complete sacrifice.

Now wash me and I shall be I give up myself And whatever I know - Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow, yes, Whiter than snow – Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat; I wait, blessed Lord, At Thy crucified feet.

By faith, for my cleansing Now wash me and I shall be I see Your blood flow - Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow, yes, Whiter than snow – Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, before You I patiently wait; Come now and within me A new heart create.

To those who have sought You, Now wash me and I shall be You never said “No” - Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.

Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow, yes, Whiter than snow – Now wash me and I shall be Whiter than snow.
