Kleberg-Kenedy County Junior Livestock show Youth Homemaking Categories

Youth Homemaking Categories This presentation is provided to help clarify youth homemaking category selections for the Kleberg-Kenedy County Junior Livestock Show. Please refer to the 2016-2017 KKJLS Rules and Regulations for additional rules and information.

cakes NO MIX OF ANY KIND! Round (bundt or layered) Rectangular Cupcakes (4) Must be displayed as an entire item in adherence to the recipe in container provided by KKJLS. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Mixes Plus Cake, cookies, bar, bread, sugar-free, muffin, cupcake, etc. Mix is used as the base of recipe. Mix is defined as biscuit mix, cake mix, brownie mix, cookie mix, etc. No refrigerated biscuits, refrigerated cookie dough, frozen rolls, phyllo dough, etc. Must be displayed as an entire item in adherence to the recipe in container provided by KKJLS. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Preserved foods Jerky, salsa, jelly, jams, sauces, pickles, relishes, etc. Must provide 2 sealed canning jars or other vacuum sealed containers with a label providing date of canning clearly marked, as well as type of food. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Quick bread Loaf, muffins, rolls, or any other bread Item must be displayed in its entirety in a container provided by KKJLS. May not contain yeast, refrigerated biscuits, crescent rolls, or premade frozen dough of any kind. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Yeast Bread Loaf, muffins, rolls, or any other bread Item must be displayed in its entirety in a container provided by KKJLS. MUST contain yeast; no refrigerated biscuits, crescent rolls, or premade frozen dough of any kind may be used. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

cookies Cookies, brownies, bars, drop, molded, rolled, pressed, no-bake, etc. Display as many as possible to make it look attractive (at least 6 uniform cookies/pieces) in container provided by KKJLS. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Candy Candy, fudge, divinity, brittle, pralines, etc. Display as many as possible to make it look attractive (at least 6 uniform cookies/pieces) in container provided by KKJLS. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Must be displayed in container provided by KKJLS. Sugar-free desserts May be candy, cookie, cake, bread, jam, jelly, etc. Must be sugar-free No mixes of any kind Must be displayed in container provided by KKJLS. Must be displayed without cake board, or any non-edible embellishments.

Sewing Must include Portfolio! Item made exclusively on a sewing machine Machine quilts, machine appliques, combination, small wall hangings, clothing, doll accessories, baby clothing, blankets, pillows, pillow cases, pet apparel, etc. Must be displayed on a hanger and enclosed in plastic to protect the project from damage. Copy of pattern must be submitted at validation with index cards.

Must include Portfolio! Creative Arts Projects that are handmade or hand-stitched, created from scratch. Hand-stitched quilt, embroidery, cross-stitch, latch hook, macramé, crochet, beading (jewelry, necklaces, bracelets, earrings), or other hand made accessories. Entries must be displayed in plastic and on a hanger when appropriate.

Must include Portfolio! Decorative arts Projects that are made from existing items embellished with paints, fabrics, ribbons, etc. Floral arrangements, wreaths, decorative picture frames, painted step stools, drawings, sketches, etc. Must be able to be carried by exhibitor in judging condition, completely assembled and fit through a single doorway. Entries must be displayed in plastic and on a hanger when appropriate.

Canvas Art Must include Portfolio! Projects are done on a canvas or art paper. Mediums: pastels, oil, water color, chalk, charcoal, etc. Entries must be on canvas or art paper backed by a piece of cardboard to protect the artwork. They must also be enclosed in plastic to protect the artwork

Must include Portfolio! Industrial arts Any project using power tools or machinery. Wood, metal, plastic or leather. Must be able to be carried by exhibitor in judging condition, completely assembled and fit through a single doorway. No large, outside items such as fire pits, swings, bar-b-que pits, picnic tables, outdoor furniture, etc. will be allowed to be judged against other Youth Homemaking projects.

Must include Portfolio! Recycled Arts Any project completely composed of recycled materials. May include old tires, small furniture, pallets, old paper goods, juice wrappers, etc. May only purchase paints, glue, thread, etc. It must take on a new life. Ex.) a feed sack could become an apron; old tire could become a stool. Must be able to be carried by exhibitor in judging condition, completely assembled and fit through a single doorway. No large, outside items such as fire pits, swings, bar-b-que pits, picnic tables, outdoor furniture, etc. will be allowed to be judged against other Youth Homemaking projects.

Photography Color or Black & White Photos may not be larger than 8x10 and must be vacuumed, dry or flush mounted with no mat, and placed in a plastic sheet protector. Exhibitors name or face may NOT appear in or on the photo.
