Comparing And Ordering Today’s lesson . . . ascending descending What: Comparing And Ordering RATIONAL NUMBERS Why? . . . so I can compare and order groups of fractions, decimals, percentages. How? . . . by participating in all class activities, taking accurate notes, and completing homework.

When comparing a mixture of fractions, decimals, and %’s, what should you do first?

Once in decimal form, what is a strategy for comparing/ordering decimals?

Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals, and %’s . . .

HOW DO WE COMPARE DECIMAL NUMBERS???? Start with the LARGEST place value digit and compare. If there is a “tie,” move on to the next digit, etc. In other words . . . Compare the whole numbers (LEFT of decimal point). 2) If there is a “tie,” move on to the TENTHS (RIGHT of dec. point). 3) If there is another “tie,” move on to the HUNDREDTHS. 4) If needed, keep moving on to the next place value digit(s). Tip: Sometimes it is helpful to think of money!

Why might a student think that 0.0499 is bigger than 0.08? MODE … Why might a student think that 0.0499 is bigger than 0.08?

Remember: CONVERT TO DECIMALS FIRST!!!! Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and %’s: Remember: CONVERT TO DECIMALS FIRST!!!! Guided Practice: Place a greater-than (>), less-than (<), or equal (=) sign in the blanks: 0.023 _____ 0.6 2) 35% _____ 3.5 3) 2/5 _____ 40% < < = Your Turn: Place a greater-than (>), less-than (<), or equal (=) sign in the blanks: 4) 4.5 _____ 45% 5) 1.5% _____ 0.0092 6) 3/8 _____ 0.4 > > <

Remember: CONVERT TO DECIMALS FIRST!!!! Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and %’s: Remember: CONVERT TO DECIMALS FIRST!!!! Guided Practice (What goes in the middle?): Which of the following makes the statement true? 0.56 < __________ < 60% a) ½ b) ¾ c) 57.5% d) 75% ¼ < __________ < 125% a) 12.5% b) 1.25 c) 5.5% d) 0.55

Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and %’s: Your Turn: Which of the following makes the statement true? 0.7 < __________ < 75% a) ¾ b) 70% c) 0.73 d) 7.3 < __________ < 55% a) 20% b) 0.25 c) 0.025 d) 0.2

BRAIN BREAK!! “Smart Move” Exercise

Ordering Decimal Numbers: Remember: Start with the whole #’s, move on to the tenths, etc.

Ordering Decimal Numbers: Guided Practice: Put the following decimal numbers in ascending order: 1) 1.025 1.25 0.039 0.4 Answer: 0.039; 0.4; 1.025; 1.25 Your Turn: 2) 0.0055 0.2 0.015 0.15 Answer: 0.0055; 0.015; 0.15; 0.2

Let’s tie this all together!! Ordering ALL Types (FDP’s): Let’s tie this all together!! 0.0255 1/8 13%

Ordering ALL Types (FDP’s): 1.7% 1 ¾ 1.755 Decimal Version

Ordering ALL Types (FDP’s): Your Turn: 2/3 66% 0.6

Word Problems: 1. Amanda, Bill, and Max went running. Amanda ran 3.2 miles, Bill ran 3 2/5 miles, and Max ran 3.15 miles . Who ran the least amount of distance? Max ran the least amount of distance.

2. At Simpson Middle School, the 6th graders are absent 1/8 of the time, the 7th graders are absent 0.1 of the time, and 8th graders are absent 13.5% of the time. Which grade is absent the most? The 8th graders are absent the most!

We should convert everything into decimals first! Wrap-it-Up (Summary): Answer the essential questions . . . We should convert everything into decimals first!

Compare whole numbers first. If there is a tie, move Wrap-it-Up (Summary): Answer the essential questions . . . Compare whole numbers first. If there is a tie, move onto the TENTHS, etc. Look at the numbers as money , and then compare.
