General Overview Economic Activities: Forestry, agriculture, electricity, gas, water, wine, fruit, vegetables and flowers. Chile Population: As of 2013 = 17.62 million Political Division: Maule Region contains 4 provinces with 30 communes. Parral falls under the Linares province. Culture: Diverse mix of Spanish colonial and indigenous cultures. National dance is the cueca. Home to famous contributors of literature. Chilean Academy of Painting encouraged aspiring artists to paint. Religion in Chile: Roman Catholic(66.7%) and Evangelical(16.4%) Languages in Chile: Spanish(99.5%), English(10.2%) and Indigenous(1%)

Social Class Structure Upper Class: Wealthy industrialists, merchants, politicians and military Middle Class: Largely urban with varied income, occupations and interests. Consists of professionals, teachers and university professors, civil servants an private employers. In addition, some small merchants, industrialists and inventors. Lower Class: Farm laborers, craft workers, factory workers, and miners.

Brief History of Chile In 1818, Chile gained its independence from Spain under the rule of Bernardo O’Higgins who laid the foundations of modern state with a two-party system and a central government. In 1891 a revolt was led by Pedro Montt to overthrow Jose Balmaceda. A parliamentary dictatorship was established and lasted until 1925 when a new constitution adopted. In 1970, Salvador Allende became the first democratic, Marxist, elected president and began his regime of nationalization and radical social reform.

In 1936, Neruda’s best friend Frederico Garicia was assassinated during the Spanish Civil War. The experience had negative effects caused Neruda to join the Communist party. Relevant Literary or Philosophical movement: Known as a literary spokesman for goals and dreams of common citizens in the Third World. After many changes Neruda exposed the harsh realities of Imperialism. Genres: Poetry Main themes: Imperialism Style: Personal and erotic to historical and political. With some humor about everyday living. Examples: In the United Fruit Co. poem, the line “Jehovah divided his universe: Anaconda, Ford Motors, Coca-Cola Inc.” is an example of humor on everyday living. Other: The United Fruit Company was an American corporation that ran from 1899-1970. -Traded tropical fruit grown in Latin American countries to United States and Europe -Company enforced America Imperialistic politics during the red scare -Triggered the Santa Marta Massacre Trujillo, Tacho, Carias, Martinez and Ubico are all Central and South American dictators. Rafael Trujillo was a Dominican Republic dictator who was responsible for the deaths of 50,000 citizens and 10,000 citizens in the Parsley Massacre. Parsley Massacre: was a genocidal massacre carried out by president Trujillo against the Haitian population during fall of 1937.
