Common Distractions That Cause Car Accidents

Car accident fatalities are common on U. S Car accident fatalities are common on U.S. roads and the number of accidents is increasing each year. Driver distraction is considered one of the main causes of these accidents. There are many other habits that fall into the category of distracted driving apart from using smartphones. Some of the most common driver distractions that cause car accidents are:

Dialing a Number Dialing a number to make a call is one of the most dangerous forms of distractions. It increases a driver’s crash risk by 12 times.

Reaching for an Object Reaching for an object is a distraction in itself. It is usually the first mistake a driver makes before he or she ignores the law and begins texting or surfing the web. This type of distraction increases the odds of a crash by up to 9 times.

Using Touchscreens There are many cars equipped with touchscreen menus and navigation currently on the road. Research has shown that using these devices increases the risk of a crash by more than 4 times.

Operating the Radio This is one of the oldest and most common forms of distraction. A driver trying to operate the radio doubles the risk of a crash.

Texting Most states have banned texting while driving. Texting increases a driver’s crash risk by 6 times. Studies have shown that approximately 40% of drivers ignore texting and driving laws.
