GOLDEN COIN OF CROESUS By chimdindu Ohayagha

WHO? Croesus was the king of Lydia. He ruled from about 560-547 BCE

WHAT? The golden coins were known to be the world’s first coins, produced over 2500 years ago The two deep impressions were created by a hammer, used to punch the image of the lion and bull into the blank coin.

WHAT?/how? By pounding the pieces of metal they would become flat allowing the medal to have a higher purification when heated. The flat sheets of metal would be placed in a furnace where it would be smelted to remove the impurities. Smelting the gold and silver was a very crucial step in making coins during the 6th century BCE because the value of the coins depended on the purity of the metal. After being smelted the nugget of gold and silver would be hit by an anvil "stamping" the emblem of the lion and bull.

WHERE

Why? Why did people invent coin money?

WHY Electrum was used for the first coins, but coinage gained popularity when gold and silver coins were introduced. Coinage probably developed in Lydia because it was a trading centre and possessed large gold supplies. To establish its value metal was checked for purity and weighed. The Lydians minted coins of consistent weight and purity to speed up transactions.
