CHINESE E-COMMERCE RAPID EXPANSION FOR WHOM YOUR VALUE OUR PROPOSITION Source: Holst Centre CHINESE E-COMMERCE RAPID EXPANSION With a population of over 1.3 billion, China has emerged as the world’s largest consumer market for food and beverage (F&B). According to Euromonitor, China is one of the fastest growing F&B markets in Asia, with an average annual growth rate of 35.4 per cent from 2011 to 2014. Increased interest and demand for foreign F&B is being driven by China’s e-commerce development and its rising per capita income. Furthermore Rabobank noted that imported F&B is perceived to be safe and of high quality. This is amplified by the fact that the Chinese trust in the local market is still lacking after the many food-related scandals in recent years. FOR WHOM The rapid expansion of e-commerce in China has captured headlines around the world. The year 2013 will be remembered as the one in which China surpassed the US as the world’s largest digital retail market. According to EY the Chinese e-commerce market exceeded 453.61 billion USD in terms of sales in 2014. This figure is estimated to continue growing at a compound annual rate of about 20% every year projected to reach USD1 trillion by 2019. E-commerce has given China’s digital consumers access to more variety and quality products from overseas, and a notable share of consumers appears to be taking advantage. Mckinsey noted that nearly a fifth of the digital consumers now buy some goods from vendors outside China. China had 460 million online shoppers in 2015. They also found that cross-border shoppers prefer items that are either non-existing or too scarce at domestic vendors. This mission is aimed for Dutch small & medium enterprises who have limited experience in international trade or if China is a new export destination.
