Psychological subfields Applied Research Basic Research Use basic research findings to find ways to change/help behaviors and mental processes in necessary situations. How can anti-anxiety medications help us control fear? How can teachers best teach? How can an individual increase the likelihood that they will have a successful blind date based on attribution theory? Done to expand the knowledge base What brain structures relate to aggression and fear? What are effective learning strategies? How do people make attributions about others’ behaviors? Psychological subfields

Psychological subfields Psychiatrist Psychologist A branch of medicine dealing with psychological disorders Practiced by physicians who sometimes use medical (ex. drugs) treatments as well as psychotherapy Requires an M.D. License Can Prescribe medications (RX) A field of psychology that may include a wide range of educational backgrounds PhD PsyD Masters (licensed clinical social work, psychological counseling, etc.) Clinicians may conduct research, treat patients, both Cannot prescribe medication Psychological subfields
