Communication Devices.. Name: Dana AlMadi ID: 201200064 Instructor: Wesal Ali

Outline: What is a communication device? Examples of communication devices Communications over the telephone network. Some of the widely used network communication.

What is a communication device? It is any type of hardware capable of transmitting data, instructions and information between a sending device and a receiving device.

Examples of communication devices: 1- Dial – Up Modems : It is a communication device that can convert digital signals to analog signals and analog signals to digital signals.

2- Digital Modems: ISDN, DSL and Cable A communication device that sends and receives data and information to and from a digital line. DSL modem Cable modem

3- Wireless Modems: Wireless modems, which have an external or built in antenna, are available as USB flash drive, Express Card modules, PC Card and memory cards.

4- Network Cards Sometimes called a network interface card , is a communication device that enable a computer or device that does not have built- in networking capability to access a network.

5- Wireless Access Points: A central communication device that allows computers and devices to transfer data wirelessly among themselves or to a wired network.

6- Routers: It is a communication device that connect multiple computers or other routers together and transmits data to its correct destination on a network.

Communications over the telephone network: Dial-Up Lines DSL Dedicated Lines FTTP ATM ISDN Lines

Dial Up Lines: Temporary connection Not permanent cost = regular telephone call

Dedicates Lines: -always on connection -Constant connection -Can be either analog or digital

ISDN Lines : For small business Faster transfer rates With it, the telephone line carries three or more signals “multiplexing”

DSL: Fast speeds on existing standard. provide both voice and data comm.

An optical terminal at your location receives the signals.. FTTP: Uses fiber-optic cable to provide high- speed access. With FTTP service: An optical terminal at your location receives the signals..

ATM: - Carries voice, data, video, and multimedia . Used by telephone networks, the internet and other. the internet standard for data transmission.

Some of the widely used network communication: 1- Ethernet 2- Bluetooth

1- Ethernet .. Ethernet is a protocol that controls the way data is transmitted over a local area network (LAN). It uses wires (meaning it is not a wireless technology).

2- Bluetooth : is a short-range wireless radio technology that allows electronic devices to connect to one another. Generally, Bluetooth has a range of up to 30 ft. or greater, depending on the Bluetooth core specification version. Newer devices, using newer versions of Bluetooth, have ranges over 100 ft.

Thank you for listening.
