How to Find Funding Office of Research Development http://www.txstate.edu/research/ord.html Evy Gonzales, MPA Director of Research Development Jessica Schneider, CRA Research Coordinator, College of Liberal Arts

Today’s Topics: Sources and types of funding opportunities Mechanisms funders use to disseminate opportunities Tips for finding funding Search tools available to Texas State researchers (PIVOT, Grants Resources Center, Foundation Directory)

Sources of Funding Federal Government State Government Local Government Professional Orgs Private Foundations Corporations Individuals Local Businesses Associations (American Cancer Society…)

Types of Opportunities Request for proposal (RFP) Broad agency announcement (BAA) Funding opportunity announcement (FOA) Request for information (RFI) Information for bid (IFB) Invitation to bid (ITB) Request for quote (RFQ) Dear Colleague Letters Program Announcements (PA)

Types of Opportunities Paths to funding: Responding to a sponsor-published solicitation Submitted in response to a specific work statement from the sponsor for specific research, development, or training projects or to provide specific services or goods. Submitting an unsolicited or investigator-initiated proposal Initiated by the applicant and submitted according to the sponsor’s broad priorities or guidelines. Roughly 50% of NSF and 80% of NIH research funding is awarded this way. These are best done after building a relationship and vetting the concept with a program manager. Each agency has a different process, but it usually begins with a concept paper. DOE (energy) has a guide for unsolicited proposals. NSF has Dear Colleague Letters and a process in their Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide. NIH has Parent Announcements

Finding federal funding opportunities For all federal grant opportunities (alerts, searches, application)- www.Grants.gov For contracting opportunities (current RFPs)- https://www.fbo.gov/ For a list of federal programs- http://www.cfda.gov/ Agency websites/listservs Federal priority announcements

Finding State funding opportunities Texas state agency list - http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/apps/lrs/agencies/ State contracting opportunities (current RFPs)- http://esbd.cpa.state.tx.us/ Agency boards and committees State priority announcements Professional networks

Finding Private, Corporate and Other Funding Opportunities Sponsor websites Professional organization listservs & networks Foundation Directory Online (subscription via TX State) Philanthropy News Digest (http://philanthropynewsdigest.org/rfps) Google (and like) searches *Clearance required by University Advancement for private funding. Contact your Research Coordinator to facilitate.

Other places to find funding: Local government websites Local businesses (HEB, Target, banks, insurance companies) Peers and other programs with similar focus Journal article acknowledgements Texas State internal solicitations (diversity initiatives, computer lab equipment, REP) Office of Research Development and College Research Coordinator email announcements

Tips for Searching for Funding Develop an array of relevant search terms. Utilize keywords, categories, or tags found within the database. Familiarize with your most likely sources and search often. Sign-up for alerts with PIVOT, Grants.gov, agencies, GRC, etc. Don’t dismiss the unlikely sources (think outside the box). Remain open-minded as you search. Vet the funding alert/solicitation before acting on it. Consider collaborating (join internal groups such as CIRG, utilize Faculty Commons, reach out to your Research Coordinator)

Texas State Tools for Finding Funding Grant Resources Center Foundation Directory Online PIVOT

Grants Resources Center (GRC) GRC is a not-for-profit service of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities http://www.aascu.org/GRC/Default.aspx Username: txstate Password: awards GrantSearch© Faculty Alerts GrantSearch is designed exclusively for GRC member campuses to allow the user to search the funding opportunity database using five criteria: (1) academic subject; (2) activity; (3) funding sponsor; (4) deadline month;  and (5) keyword. More information about each criteria can be accessed by clicking on the  query icons located throughout the GrantSearch interface.   The GrantSearch database contains over 1,500 funding opportunities that support academic activities such as research, education, training, fellowships, program or curriculum development, and/or equipment acquisition. Most programs are cyclical (funded every year) and cater to national or large regional audiences. Many are geared to institutional capacity building, faculty development or postdoctoral training. The database also includes opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The goal of GrantSearch is to provide GRC members with access to all the Federal cyclical grant programs,  as well as other Federal and private foundation programs of general interest that make a significant number of awards.

Grants Resources Center (GRC) Electronic Publications “GrantWeek” – weekly news; analyzes federal legislation, agency policies and challenges, and best practices in research administration with much of the information gathered on the ground in Washington “Bulletin” – twice-weekly digest of Grants.gov, Federal Register, and FedBizOpps notices “Deadlines” – a monthly funding opportunity alert that provides 90 days’ notice of federal and private application deadlines
