Sherwood Parkdale Skating Club

Background Information The SPSC is a not for profit organization and are a registered club with Skate Canada under the Skate Canada PEI Section. The management of the club is run by parent volunteers. Our programs are run by Nationally Certified Professional Coaches and they will be teaching the instructional portion of the PreCanskate/CanSkate lesson. Additional skaters you’ll see working with your children and who your child may refer to as “their coach” are our program assistants (PA’s) who assist our professional coaches. PA's are skaters from our STARskate program, or qualified skaters who volunteer their time each week to help our coaches with the CanSkate sessions. New this year, on-ice translator when available

Pre-Canskate, Canskate & Junior Coaches Elizabeth Clark (Canskate & Junior Group) Jessica Godfrey (Canskate & Junior Group) Keesha Ryan (Pre-Canskate & Canskate) Michelle Coyle is our Coaching Director and does group lessons on our Senior Starskate and Adult Sessions Our coaches work as a team!

Contacting Our Coaches Coaches are available for questions after the session Avoid before the session begins as they are busy making preparations Please do not disrupt coaches during the session unless it is an emergency Contact information Main menu bar under “Coaches/Club Coaches” Contact Coaches directly if you are wanting to arrange private lessons

What to expect

Pre-Canskate Canskate Our format for this Program age is play orientated. We have found that it takes 3 to 4 weeks for the skaters to get used to the idea of skating. Class size is limited to a maximum of 35 skaters with a maximum 1:10 ratio Canskate Complete series of balance, control and agility skills that will prepare skaters for any ice skating sport or recreational skating. Nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success. Designed for 90% movement so skaters learn in an active and fun group setting Lessons are given in a group format with a coach-to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning.

Pick up name tag off the table CANSKATE ROUTINE Pick up name tag off the table The sticker symbol on your tag represents your group All Skaters do a warm-up together at the start When skaters go into groups, skaters go to the sign that matches their name tag sticker Skaters will stay with and move to each station with their group Certified Coaches provide lessons Program assistance help with activities at stations and aide coaches An on-ice Chinese translator will assist with translating instructions during lesson time when available; and occasionally at other stations. Children should stay with their group and follow as best they can. Where to go from here Completed stage 4 canskaters may have the opportunity to move up to Jumpstart in the Starskate Program. Recommended to those skaters who want to be figure skaters with coach approval Recommended to multi sport athletes

Jumpstart and Junior Helmet Policy and Recommendations All Skaters new to STARskate must initially wear a helmet All skaters must have completed a minimum of Canskate level 5 to skate on the STARskate session without a helmet and with coach approval *per insurance requirements Parents/Guardians make the final decision for their skater to not wear a helmet on the STARskate session once eligible.
