You Said What!? Doubled in children over past 30 years. Nearly one in three children are obese. Approximately 12.7 million children and adolescents, ages 2-19 are obese. If habits do not change, the number of overweight or obese infants, children, and adolescents around the world will increase to 70 million by 2025. Average American eats fifteen more pounds of sugar a year then in 1970.

Overweight VS. Obesity Overweight Obesity Excess body weight for a specific height. Body weight is contributed from fat, muscle, bone, and water. Excess body fat. Child or adolescent is well above the normal weight for his/ her height.

Obesity On the Rise 30 years ago 21st century Children walked to school. Participated in more outside activities. Home cooked meals were provided. Normal portion sizes. Less access to fast food. Children have more screen time. Children do not walk to school. Less home cooked meals. Gym class and afterschool activities suffer because of budget cuts. Larger portion sizes Eating 31% more calories then four years ago.

How Childhood Obesity is Measured

Screen Time Average 18 year old spends about 7.5 hours a day using an electronic device. Recommendations states less then two hours of screen time a day!!

Portion Size: Vegetable ½ cup of chopped raw or cooked vegetables 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables

Portion Control: Fruit 1 piece of fruit or melon ¾ cup of juice ½ cup of canned fruit ¼ cup of dried fruit

Portion Control: Meat and Milk 2/3 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry ½ cup of cooked dry beans 1 cup of low fat or fat free milk or yogurt 2 ounces of cheese

Overall Snapshot Now that obesity has affected many around the world, education and change has been in effect The reason I am majoring in Health Promotion and Fitness Management is to help children before it is too late. Easy and fun education is the best way to teach an important topic.
