Jesus At Simon’s House Luke 7:36-50

“Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him “Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” (Luke 7:36-39).

“And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.” “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in” (Luke 7:40-45).

“You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace” (Luke 7:46-50).

Jesus At Simon’s House Simon

Simon 1) He is a Pharisee. “Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat” (v. 36).

Simon 2) Pharisee defined. “The first and feeble beginnings of this sect seem to be traceable to the age immediately succeeding the return from exile. In addition to the books of the O.T. the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life. They sought for distinction and praise by the observance of external rites and by the outward forms of piety, such as ablutions, fastings, prayers, and alms-giving; and, comparatively negligent of genuine piety, they prided themselves on their fancied good works” (Thayer)

Simon 3) His estimate of Jesus. (a) He was interested in finding out more about the Lord. “Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat” (Luke 7:36).

Simon 3) His estimate of Jesus. (b) Had he heard of what Jesus had been doing? The healing of the centurion’s servant in Capernaum (Luke 7:1-10). The raising of the widows son at Nain (Luke 7:11-17). The healing of many with various sickness (Luke 17:21).

Simon 3) His estimate of Jesus. (c) Thinks He is no prophet. “Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner” (Luke 7:39). “Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people” (Luke 7:16).

Simon 4) His estimate of the woman. “Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner” (Luke 7:39). “Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon…” (Luke 7:44).

Simon 5) His estimate of himself. (a) Superior to the woman. “…she is a sinner” (Luke 7:39).

Simon 5) His estimate of himself. (b) Being a great host to the Lord. “Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil” (Luke 7:44-46).

Jesus At Simon’s House Simon The Woman

The Woman 1) What she thought of herself – a sinner. “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner…” (Luke 7:37).

The Woman 2) What she thought of Jesus. “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil” (Luke 7:37).

The Woman 3) Her humility, sacrifice, and love. “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil” (Luke 7:37-38).

The Woman 4) Her faith. “Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace” (Luke 7:50).

Jesus At Simon’s House Simon The Woman Those Reclining

Those Reclining At The Table 1) What they thought about Jesus’ statement. “Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven” (Luke 7:48). “And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” (Luke 7:49).

Those Reclining At The Table 2) They knew what He had been doing! “And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region” (Luke 7:17).

Those Reclining At The Table 3) What did He do to show He had power to forgive? “But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”--He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house” (Luke 5:22-24).

Jesus 1) We can see His omniscience. “And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it” (Luke 7:40).

Jesus 2) We can see He is God. “Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven” (Luke 7:48). “And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Luke 5:21).

Jesus 3) He was fulfilling His purpose in coming. “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:9-10). “Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven” (Luke 7:48).

Jesus 4) He reveals to us that love is shown in action. “Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little” (Luke 7:47).

Jesus 5) He will rebuke those who need it.

Conclusion: 1) How much have you been forgiven? 2) 500 denarii is about two years labor; 50 is about 2 ½ months. 3) Are you more like the Pharisee or the woman? 4) Would you wash the feet of Jesus with your tears, dry them with your hair, and anoint His feet with perfume?
