CH-1 Introduction to Mechanics What is mechanics? Physical science deals with the state of rest or motion of bodies under the action of force 5 Why we study mechanics? This science form the ground work for further study in the design and analysis of structures

Branchs of Mechanics 6 Mechanics Rigid body Mechanics Statics Kinetics Deformable body Mechanics Fluid Mechanics Kinematics Dynamics

Fundamental Concepts : Statics: Science which deals with the equilibrium of a body at rest or moving with constant velocity. Dynamics: Science which deals with accelerated motion of bodies. Rigid body: The combination of a large number of particles, the relative movement between its parts remain constant or negligible. 7

Space - associated with the position of a point P given in terms of three coordinates measured from a reference point or origin. Force: Action of one body on another may be push or a pull force. ( F =ma ) Weight: Force which attract the body toward the centre of the Earth. (W=mg ) Particle: A body have a mass with negligible dimension. 8

systems of units U.S. or British System Units (FPS)  Length in feet.inch (ft, in), ( ‘, “ )  Time in Seconds (s)  Force in Pounds, Kip (lb, K) International System or Metric Units (SI)  Length in metre, millimetre, (m, mm )  Time in Seconds (s)  Force in Newton, Kilo newton (N, kN) 9

Metric System (SI) ◦ Newton’s second law F = m.a  Force (N) = mass (kg)  acceleration (m/s 2 ) ◦ Newton is the force required to give a mass of 1 kg an acceleration of 1 m/s 2 U.S. Customary System (FPS) ◦ Force (lb)=mass(slug)  acceleration(ft/sec 2 )  Slug = lb.sec 2 /ft ◦ Slug is the mass give an acceleration of 1 ft/sec 2 when acted upon by a force of 1 l b 10

Conversion of Units Converting from one system of unit to another; 11 SIFPSQuantity N1 lbForce kg1 slugMass m1 ftLength The standard value of g (gravitational acceleration) SI unitsg = m/s 2 FPS units g = ft/sec 2
