Physics Subject Session June 2015

Welcome ‘Physics is the only real science, the rest is just stamp collecting’ Ernest Rutherford

Why Newcastle? Physics started here in 1871 World leading research From fundamental concepts to application Strong links with engineering and industry Vibrant city Centrally located campus Low cost of living

Physics Our aim : To facilitate your transition in to a highly skilled physicist, combining strong academic foundations with the practical and analytical skills to shape the future; for the benefit of everyone

Physics The most fundamental of the natural sciences Encompassing a study of the basic ingredients of all forms of matter Starting at the quantum level, enabling the creation of new materials and paradigm shifting electronic devices; Challenging us with the discoveries of modern astrophysics and cosmology

Physics at Newcastle: Structure Thematic strands run through the programme - introductory; principles; advanced Significant laboratory content in stages 1 & 2 Individual and group projects based in research groups in stages 3 & 4. Course now officially recognised by the Institute of Physics

Physics at Newcastle: Teaching There are normally 2 lectures a week for each taught module. Plus weekly laboratory sessions Problem sessions and drop-in sessions for each module, and bi-weekly tutorials Lecturers have an ‘open door’ policy, or office hours Minimum contact hours per week

Physics at Newcastle: Assessment Exams-typically 90% of each module mark Coursework for formative and summative assessment Problem sessions and drop-in sessions for each module, and bi-weekly tutorials Degree classification is based on the second and third year marks weighted 1:3 (1:3:3 MPhys)
