A Summary of Some of the Challenges & Strengths Standard I: Mission & Institutional Effectiveness Standard II: Student Learning Programs & Services Standard III: Resources Standard IV: Leadership & Governance

Standard I: Mission & Institutional Effectiveness Challenge & Planning Agenda –Strengthen the college shared governance and planning infrastructure to ensure its relevance, viability, and sound use Strengths –College stakeholders actively engaged to improve the mission, vision, and values statement –Program review and unit plans lie at the heart of the college planning process

Standard II: Student Learning Programs and Services IIA: Instructional Programs Challenge & Planning Agenda –While advanced, complete the full SLO/assessment cycle college-wide Strengths –Quality assurance in course and program offerings and wide participation in curricula review –Effective organization and development of SLOs and assessment planning and implementation

Standard II: Student Learning Programs and Services IIB: Student Support Services Challenge & Planning Agenda –Fix the financial aid software problem Strengths –Students have access to a wide array of student support services i.e., categoricals, ambassadors –Model counseling curricula demonstrating integration of instruction and student services to ensure student retention, persistence and success

Standard II: Student Learning Programs and Services IIC: Library and Learning Support Services Challenge & Planning Agenda –Renovate/rebuild the library infrastructure Strengths –Wide access to library and learning resources via library, computer labs and learning centers –Coordinated tutoring services with contextualized and discipline-specific training for tutors

Standard III: Resources IIIA. Human Challenge & Planning Agenda –Secure adequate faculty and classified personnel to meet student and other demands Strength –Significant hires within the ranks of the administration, faculty, and classified staff

Standard III: Resources IIIB. Physical Challenge & Planning Agenda –Address decades of deferred maintenance Strength –Leveraged Measure A bond funds to “makeover” educational facilities of the college

Standard III: Resources IIIC. Technology Challenge & Planning Agenda –Deliver comprehensive training program to provide sufficient information and practice for effective use of new systems and application tools (i.e., financial, facilities, student services, and learning assessment) Strength –Aggressive pursuit of technological tools to improve educational efforts and administrative operations—i.e., effective service delivery

Standard III: Resources IIID. Financial Challenge & Planning Agenda –Fully integrate financial planning and educational master planning Strengths –Financial stability with incremental growth in strategic areas such as basic skills and career technical education preparation –Administrative and faculty leadership stability to allow for financial stability & effective management

Standard IV: Leadership & Governance IVA. Decision-Making Roles and Processes Challenge & Planning Agenda –Develop virtual log of comments, collaborations, events, and issues warranting further attention and to document shared governance processes Strength –On-going efforts to increase faculty, classified, administrative, and student participation in decision-making roles and processes

Standard IV: Leadership & Governance IVB. Board and Administrative Organization Challenge & Planning Agenda –Ensure clarity among all college constituencies about the relationship between planning and budgeting, especially at the district level Strength –Diversity of board members with varying longevity Along with the chancellor, trustees maintain sound working relationships and a commitment to the stability and advancement of the Peralta colleges

Summary Finding Laney College remains a stable, high- quality institution with growing educational programs and services to address the learning needs of constituents. Integrity in adhering to mandates, procedural and leadership requirements Ingenuity in maintaining efforts, and in many instances, doing more with less
