Five Themes of Geography Reading and Questions 1.What are questions geographers ask when they study the earth? 2. How can each theme be used to know more about geography?

Important Notes Location: Absolute location is a geographic address. Absolute location is determined by latitude and longitude. These lines can pinpoint any location on Earth. Latitude runs from east to west. These lines are also called parallels. These lines never meet and divide the earth into units called degrees. The Equator is at the center of these parallels. Longitude line or Meridians run through the North and South Poles. The Prime Meridian runs through the center.

Continued Place: A location’s physical and human features. For example: A place is hot, cold, hilly, crowded, etc. Human-Environment Interaction: How people have deliberately changed the physical characteristics of their natural environment. For example: tunnels, railways. Movement: How people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another. Region: A region has a unifying characteristic such as climate, land, population, or history. For example: Nile Valley region.
