A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moldable. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural. Most plastics contain organic polymers. PALAAKSHEE 38

Thermosetting plastics have cross- linked arrangement of molecules can melt and take shape once; after they have solidified, they stay solid. In the thermosetting process, a chemical reaction occurs that is irreversible. Examples include: bakelite, melamine, duroplast. THERMOPLASTICSTHERMOSETTING Thermoplastics have a linear arrangement of molecules. These plastics that do not undergo chemical change in their composition when heated and can be molded again and again. Examples include: polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, (PVC). 1. The major chemicals that go into the making of plastics are highly toxic and pose serious threat to living beings of all species on earth. 2. Some of the constituents of plastics such as benzene and vinyl chloride are proved to cause cancer, and other gases and liquid hydrocarbons spoil earth and air. 3. When burnt plastic releases a host of poisonous chemicals including dioxin into the air. 4. Plastic wastes clog the drains and thus hit especially urban drain systems. Choked drains provide excellent breeding grounds for mosquito besides causing floods during the monsoon. 5. The plastic wastes being dumped into the rivers, streams and sea contaminate water, soil marine life and also the air we breathe. TANISHA GARG 40

1. The only way to overcome the deadly and lasting danger of plastic pollution is to cut down the use of plastics, if possible avoid it altogether. 2. Say no to plastics wherever and whenever you can. 3. Prefer to carry your own bags for grocery shopping, a jute or cloth bag 4. Do not throw plastic wrappers carelessly on road. They are ultimately carried to city sewage system, resulting in clogging of drainage. 5. Keep in mind the principle of 4R’s. REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE RECOVER TANISHA GARG 40
