1 MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY
All about Plastics

2 DEFINITION OF PLASTICS
A synthetic material that is subjected to POLYMERIZATON to form a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC , nylon etc., and moulded into desired shape by applying heat and pressure. They can be broadly classified into TWO Thermoplastics and Thermosetting plastics

3 thermoplastics Thermoplastic is a type of plastic in which their chemical composition remains unchanged even when they are converted to liquid state. They are softened by heat and can be moulded. Acrylic , polypropylene , polystyrene , polythene and PVC(Poly Vinyl Chloride) come into this category More than 80% of commercial use involve Thermoplastics

4 THERMOSETTING PLASTICS
Similar to thermoplastics, thermosets are also heated initially.. It is then cured. Once cured , its shape cannot be changed even by heating. Phenolics , Melamine , Beckelite come under thermosets

5 Characteristics of plastics
They possess good toughness. Plastics are less brittle than glass, yet they can be made equally transparent and smooth. They are light in weight. They possess good strength and rigidity.
